Balch Hall questions

Anyone know what this room is like? I just got my assignment? I have mixed feelings about being in Balch-wanted a coed dorm but if I have a bigger room....

believe me...your room is going to be bigger than all of your friends in other dorms and you will like that. in the beginning of the year, you may feel left out of the whole "coed" experience, but once you bring people over to your room and you see theirs, they are going to be jealous of your room and you are going to be happy that you are in balch. trust me

can anyone tell me about the 5th floor in unit 1?

hey badfeetcat, I'm in 5th floor unit 1 also. 5155, a single. I'm wondering where all the previous posters got their info on square footage, etc. It'd be nice to know that in advance.

when you get your housing assignment, there should be a list of information, like
UG
DOUBLE
BALC XXXX
XXX sq ft

i remember seeing that on my form last year

Rooms in Balch are much bigger than other dorms (particularly the singles). The doubles and triples vary based on the size - I know a lot of the singles were converted to be doubles so I don't know how those are. Also if you live on North Balch (meaning units 1 and 2), the rooms are a lot bigger than South Balch (units 3 or 4). But it really depends on the room itself...I know my friend got a huge room my freshman year and she lived in unit 4. But I lived in unit 4 and got a small room (by small, I mean relative to Balch. The room was huge in comparison to my room soph.year) so just try it out and see.

are floors carpeted?

yes...same with the hallways with exception to some parts of the building

hmm I couldn't find the sq feet..but who cares..lol

jvanbenthem- I think I met you on facebook :)

another question: can you open the windows in rooms?

just remember chicas...just because you live in balch doesnt mean you wont be seeing guys around :P

though guys are supposed to be escorted by a balch female (*****i RAs do write up girls for not escorting guys and also write up GUYS for not having an escort)

Yes, windows can be opened. If we weren't, I think I'd be parked in a library right now (I'm spending the summer in Ithaca, living in Balch).

In theory, RAs will write you up though in any dorm if you have a guest unattended. In Balch, it is easier to write up guys since they know that they don't live there. So this isn't really unique to Balch. In smaller dorms besides Balch, where RAs know all their residents or know their faces, it happens just as frequently.

And yeah, there are plenty of guys in Balch. I think there's a story where one night a fire alarm got pulled in Balch and there were more guys coming out of the dorm than girls!

My daughter lived in a Balch single last year.

One of her friends, who lived in another dorm, used to host prospective students for overnights. Often, the visiting girls would express concern about possibly being assigned to Balch. The host girl would sometimes bring these visitors to see my daughter's room. One look at the size, the attractiveness, the closet space, and the sink in my daughter's room, and their objections would vanish.

I saw a guy climb up a wall and through a window this past year : ) it was pretty funny.

For the most part, RAs are pretty chill about guys that they see a lot. My RA the first semester was really hardcore about writing people up, but she left and we got a new one second semester who was really nice about it. If it was someone we didn't recognize, she might stop him, but boyfriends who are in and out often were kind of part of the balch family haha.

BTW if anyone has my old room - double - rm 3469 count yourself lucky. It has full bathroom and a really nice room (and that's the ground floor in south balch, which is really nice). I have pictures of it if anyone is interested in the size and such.

Balch girls don't have a problem socializing--I believe it has that stereotype because a lot of the girls who requested Balch requested it because they were uncomfortable around boys, and therefore were not as big of partiers or whatever. I had a lot of friends from Balch and other dorms, and I partied/socialized plenty : )

Can guys stay over as guests? My boyfriend will probably visit at least a few times and need to stay overnight, and if I’m with him the whole time is this ok? I guess there might be a problem with bathrooms and such…

No problem, eillah7.

Several of the bathrooms in Balch are officially designated as co-ed. These are full bathrooms, with showers, not just toilets and sinks.

So having a male overnight guest in Balch is no more trouble than having one in a co-ed dorm.

oooh im excited now. now im maybe 85% as opposed to 65% sure i want to room in balch!!! now i just have to decide whether i want a double or a single? i want a double to get a roommate that could potentially be fun and would probably be a better room to have tons of ppl over than in a single, but i want a single to have my own space and in case i get stuck with a really ****ty rooommate. i think i could deal with the limited space, especially if balchs rooms are so much bigger. any thoughts?

i had a single in balch. one word: HUGE

if anyone has any specific questions, feel free to post them here or PM me

I’m in a huge single in balch now. its worth being around girls for it as long as you are socially functional enough to make guy friends on your own.

So, I visited Balch today. First i was thinking that wouldn’t be what I wanted. but after spending some time in the other dorms and walking around campus and then talking to several girls living in there now (I hung back after the tour), I really think that is what I want for next year.

So, now my question is. If I select that as my first choice on my housing app, what are my chances of getting it? Some of the girls said it was practically a sure thing because they don’t even get enough girls who choose it to fill it. Also, I know there are a lot of singles there, but if I select double as my first choice for style of room, will that hurt my chances of getting into Balch. I am fine with a single, but would prefer a double if possible.

from what ppl have said on this thread, i dont think itll hurt your chances at all. if you want a room in balch you should get one…
