So I didn't request all-women housing but somehow I got into Balch.....did this happen to anyone else? I'm just kind of worried that it will be like a sorority or something. Any comments from anyone who lived there?

this happens every year, and it happened to me three years ago. it was a great living experience. the rooms are generally quite spacious, and you will either have a sink in your room to yourself or share a sink room with your next-door neighbor. there 4 or 5 are gorgeous lounges with chandeliers and fancy sofas. you’ve got really close access to campus, which is nice in the winter. there are all kinds of different girls in Balch, since many of them like you were placed there without requesting it. guys are allowed in just like any other guest, so it’s not like they’re prohibited. the Tatkon Center is on the second floor in the south wing. it contains Carol’s cafe, so you can get coffee, smoothies, and pre-packaged food without even going outside. sometimes office hours or even small classes are held in the Tatkon Center as well.
I think Balch is a really lovely place to live as a freshman.

additionally: I have not lived in a sorority, so I don’t know what they would be like compared to Balch, but I don’t see why that would be a negative. a lot of women at Cornell really enjoy their experience in sororities.

Krmh11, ME TOO!! I didn’t request it either.

Since I requested a double, will the price be that of a “double” or “single”?
I once heard you’re placed in a single, but you pay a double’s price. Is this true?

faustarp, you make me feel a lot better about Balch. For normal dorms, is it co-ed by floors (guys on one floor, girls on the other)? Can you also compare the pros and cons of Balch with a co-ed dorm?

Also, I’m guessing there is a choice of changing dorms, correct?

I do not know about changing dorms at all.
in the west campus dorms, the coed-ness is by room. I don’t really know about how it is on north.
the main con I can think of is that you only have women near you, so you miss on out lots of men living near you, who are generally good people worth knowing. but you there plenty of opportunities to meet people of all genders outside of your dorm, so I don’t think that’s a big deal in the scheme of things. ideally you’re not spending a ton of time holed up in your room, although if you make friends on your hall then you might like spending time with them there, and the large rooms make it easy to gather a group without people tripping over each other.
all the other pros I already mentioned.

For the low rises, the coedness is by half-suite. “suites” in the LR’s are really a part of the building with a set of doors that split into a narrow hallway with both sides having 2 singles a triple and a dbl but one is females and one is males, with separate bathrooms. The newer dorms are like faustarp said, coed by room meaning you could have a girl living in the next room over.

Also, like faustarp said, unless you hole up in your room/hallway, you’re not missing much except maybe the occasional half-naked guy walking around from the shower lol.

As to changing dorms, I have yet to meet someone who has done it. So if it does happen, I’m thinking it’s pretty darn rare.

Hey~

So I just received my cornell housing assignment- it’s for Balch (all girls) and it’s a double room.
I’m looking to get into any other dorm, or trade for a single at Balch. Please let me know if you’re interested…

Thank you!

What reasons count as valid excuses to change?

i’ve got a single at balch. ug5156 if anyone else is in my unit !

I have a single @ BALC 4275. Looking for a Blach double! Please get back to me as soon as possible!
