I've been facing an overwhelming battle between whether I should attend Ball State or Butler for college. A little background information would be... I plan to double major in Pre-Med and Psychology. I've been accepted to Butler, and I have yet to receive my acceptance letter from Ball State, but I'm sure I'll be admitted. I'm also applying to Ball State's Honors College as well. I'm a well rounded senior in high school. I'm in the top ten of my graduating class, I scored a 1810 on my SAT, a 28 on my ACT, I have a GPA of 3.96, I attend a performing arts school half time as a dance major, I dance 20+ hours a week as well as participating in several musical productions, and am involved in several other extra curricular activities. So I guess you could say that I strive to do the best and take on and balance as many challenges as possible. My trouble is that Butler has always been my top choice. After visiting both Butler and Ball State, I wasn't so sure of that anymore. I really enjoyed Ball State's atmosphere. It was friendly, inviting, I felt like I belonged there. Butler seemed stuffy. It is what it is. It's a private, rich-kid school with arrogant, stuck-up people, and I just couldn't picture myself enjoying being there. Obviously Butler is ranked higher than Ball State and is a "better" school. But does prestige really matter? Would I not be successful and be admitted into medical school if I went to Ball State? I've done plenty of research and talked to family, friends, teachers, counselors, and they've all left me indecisive. Some people say that I'd be crazy not to go to Butler because it's such a great school. Some say that title isn't everything and that I should go where I will be happiest at - that how well I do in college is all that really matters in the end no matter what college that may be at. I believe that is true in some instances. But my worry is, what if I go to Ball State and give up the chance of going to Butler? Or what if I go to Butler and absolutely hate it? Yeah, people say transfer but transferring is a hassle all on its own. Plus, transferring from private to public is difficult because private schools make you take classes that aren't necessarily in the curriculum so when you transfer to public, those credits won't matter. You can also add that Butler is quite expensive and spending $50,000 just to "try it out" to transfer to Ball State the year after isn't exactly worth it. Worth it. That's another thing. I'm not sure if Butler is worth all of the money! The dorms are terrible. I know a dorm is a dorm, but compared to Ball State's dorms they're hell. Also, the food at Butler isn't good. That may sound like a petty thing to worry about, but it matters if I'm going to live there for four years. I'm just concerned with whether or not I'll be prepared and admitted into medical school if I go to Ball State. Would it be a mistake to go to a lesser ranked school?

Hey:) I know this is way too late, but I just wanted to say that I am a Pre-Med/Psych major at Ball State, too, and I love it! It is somewhat challenging, but it’s fun and I love the campus. I got into Butler, too with a scholarship, but I thought Butler was more of a music school, while Ball State had the amazing nursing program (which would hopefully make the pre-med program amazing, too!) Either way, I’m sure you made the right call.

P.S. I hope you chose BSU!
