so i really like the bank i have now- the tellers know me and say hi whenever i come in, they've never had any hidden fees, and i've been with them since i was 14
but my bank doesn't ahve any branches on my college campus
the bank does promise to cover fees for different banks' atms, but i feel like i could run into problems without a branch (what if i get a check or lose my bank cards?)
what do you guys think- is it a bad idea to belong a bank nowhere near you?

Yes.

It’s just so much easier having a branch on-campus or nearby.

You could set up an account that’s just for checking, and keep your other account with your home bank. It doesn’t have to be either/or.

I ran into the same problem. It was really annoying because the nearest branch was 45 minutes away. It sucks when you need to deposit money and you have to drive that far to do it. What I did was I found another bank that had an ATM on campus and a few around town and also one in my hometown and I opened a checking account there. Come to find out, they also offer the same personal service. It’s a lot easier to have a bank right there for all the things you can’t do at an ATM, so I vote for finding a bank with branches near your home and campus.

Can’t you just make a deposit at the ATM?

It is going to be much easier, and much more practical, for you to use the bank on campus. Just create a free student account with said bank.

Nothing says that you can never return to your local bank. In fact, if you really want to, you can keep that account open too.

My bank isn’t at my college, I’ve been fine for 2 years so far.
I have my paychecks directly deposited.
I use whatever atm I’m around.

The one time I had money to deposit and couldn’t I mailed my dad the check. My bf didn’t have his bank near the college either. He mailed his checks directly to the bank.
