owlice: You need data to verify that bankruptcy filings are more common now than in the 1960s and 70s? While I’m at it, would you also like data that water is wet, the sun is hot, and ice is cold?

I’m far from a lobbyist. I am a university student who worked six years as a paralegal in a bankruptcy law firm. Unlike the hyperbole you embrace, my comments are based on personal experiences. I’ve been part of literally thousands of bankruptcy filings in the Southern District of New York. I’ve counseled thousands of bankrupt debtors, many of whom were repeat customers of the firm. That bankruptcy has lost its social stigma and that many people see bankruptcy as a personal financial strategy is obvious to anyone who has worked in the commercial bankruptcy industry.

The bankruptcy should include student loans for many reasons
1- why lenders are able to do bankruptcy while students are not.
2- If the student not able to make money and going through hardship has has the right to do a bankruptcy
3- College cost are rising hight while income is declining, alot jobs went off shore, many graduates are working two jobs just to cover day to day living.
4- some of you say some students are taking more than 250K loans, why are they doing that, and why lender not held responsible for that too? the student loans should only cover classes cost only and not living expenses. so we need reform that too.
5- we need to put a limit to sky rocketing school costs.

6- i have 38K student loans and I’m married with kids i have no clue how I’m going to pay that since i been doing a payment now for almost two years and my balance not going down.

I agree
1- we should hold Lenders and Students accountable, if you are going to 4 years school why are you taking more than 100K in student loans???
2- why lenders are giving that much money?? is it their way just to slave people.
3- if we are complaining about the medical costs, why medical student should pay $300,000 school tuition?

so our higher educational system needs reforms, and we should stop Lenders from taking advantage of students.
students are still kids they don’t have a real life work experience yet therefore we shouldn’t give them all kind of money to begin with, just money to cover classes not more.
