Will this change scholarship awards for 2012 if parents need to file now.

It might change what you are eligible for, but at this point I would think your school has handed out all the aid money they have available. I would check directly with school financial aid office

Are you asking if you can get more grants if your parents file for bankruptcy?

You can ask the school, but they may just think that now that your parents won’t be paying back their debts, that they can now afford to pay for your schooling. I dont’ think schools consider bankruptcy as a reason to need more aid.

Bankruptcy is not generally taken into account for FA. FA is driven mostly by income and bankruptcy generally won’t affect income so there is no reason for it to impact FA. It may of course make it difficult or impossible to take out loans. But that is probably a good thing as the last thing someone who has had to declare bankruptcy needs is new debt.

You need to get your college’s stance on this. As others here have said, bankruptcy is not something that the financial aid system views with sympathy or with assistance.

If you need loans, it might cinch a denial, though if your family is already in dire straits, it is unlikely that your parents would be eligible for PLUS or other loans. School loans are not dischargeable, by the way, through bankruptcy.

If the other thread is to be believed (where the OP said they were going to take out $300,000 in loans for an OOS public) the OP is the parent!
