I'm trying to decide whether my son should just have an account with our local credit union and use the co-op network (for cash and deposits only) or find a local bank near MIT.

Suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

MIT Federal Credit Union is right on campus.

They don’t seem to be a part of the co-op network of our credit union.

MITFCU is pretty rad. I use ING Direct + MITFCU myself; the former for most transactions, and the latter for my credit card / emergency cash / etc.

I think the biggest question to answer is whether the local co-op has a participating ATM on campus. If not, then I would suggest having at least a small checking account at one of the banks that does (MITFCU or Bank of America) – there will doubtless be times when he can’t get off campus to go to an ATM, and it doesn’t seem worth it to me to pay ATM fees rather than just opening up an account at one of the on-campus banks.

Yep, that’s why I have MITFCU.

Thank-you. This makes a lot of sense.

Is there a local Wells Fargo, per chance?

Otherwise, it seems MITFCU sounds like the way to go.

Looks like the closest Wells Fargo is in Connecticut. Haha, not too close.

I have Bank of America, which is pretty non-trendy, and which can be a frustrating big-bank experience in many ways, but they do have lots (and lots and lots) of ATMs in Boston and Cambridge.
