Congratulations, @indianboy2400! Definitely sounds like an allusion to the B/K packet. And remember, if you get the invite, you are already a winner: everyone who gets an interview will be offered either a partial or a full Banneker-Key scholarship. So you can relax to some degree and just enjoy the process!
How many people are invited to B/K scholarship each year?
@luv2sk8
Approximately 450, from which approx. 250 receive the full scholarship
When my son didn’t receive honor or scholar he sent an email and asked if he was still eligible for the Banneker/Key scholarship. We are out of state. The reply said the honors and scholars list was final and there could be no appeal, but he was still eligible for the Banneker/Key scholarship. All who apply to the University of Maryland are eligible. However, he didn’t receive the email…so I don’t think he will get the invite. Maryland may be that lost dream for him, but I’ll keep my fingers crosses for the mailing! Good luck everyone!
Here is the banner on the Banneker/Key website … “Maryland’s most prestigious scholarship for academically talented Honors College students”. I don’t know how that could be interpreted any other way than you must be in the Honors College to be considered for the B/K.
i was selected for BK. now the challenge is knowing how to have a successful interview to ensure a good BK reward
Sorry need2learn, maybe I didn’t make myself clear. Originally my son wasn’t accepted into honor or scholars. However, anyone who applies to the University of Maryland is eligible for the Banneker/Key scholarship. If you receive a Banneker/Key Scholarship then you are automatically put in Honors.
I haven’t got anything so far. Does that mean I have no hope for BK?

I have the same question as the last two posters. Maryland is absolutely my first choice but being out of state it’s more of a pipe dream if I don’t have at least a shot at banneker key. I have similar stats to srujant. If anyone could give me any idea whether it’s still possible that I could receive an email I would hugely appreciate it! Even if the answer is no. Also could those of you who were accepted let me know if you are in state or out of state? I created an account just to ask this question so I would be really appreciative of any information someone has on this!
@terptastic @srujant It’s unlikely that the posters know with certainty what the process is this year. Some years it sounds as though they send the emails in waves; some years they seem to send them all at once.
As you can see from reading this and related threads, there isn’t even consensus among the posters on whether you have to be admitted to Honors College first, or whether you can be selected for B-K and then admitted to Honors.
We are primarily parents and other students. We don’t know all of the answers, and on this issue, all people can do is give you information based on their experience in past years and so far in this process. Particularly for scholarships like B-K, we really can’t chance you. In fact, I’d be a bit suspicious of people who claim they can!
@mdhelp apparently used to work in the admissions office. Perhaps he/she can help with the question of whether the notifications are happening in waves or all at once? Thanks!!
(D2 is out of state. She received the email Wednesday, but has not received the packet. Still early days!)
Thank you so much arlmom2, that was very helpful, And congratulations to your daughter!
D got the B/K invite from UMD today. Got email Wed as well. We’re IS. Good luck everyone.
@ThatsEnough Do you know when your daughter’s interview day is? I have a couple other interviews in late Feb/early March, and was hoping that the dates wouldn’t conflict.
D’s interview date is 2/24.
D2’s interview date is March 4th. Hope you get a date that works, @indianboy2400 !
For future reference, S who is IS got the package today, postmarked 2/5 without email notification. Interview date is 3/4.
My Son is OOS from PA and was accepted into Engineering as undecided. Emailed UMD when he saw he didn’t get placed in honors or scholars. He specifically asked if this would hurt his chances for the Banneker/Key scholarship. They told him you did not need to be in honors or scholars to receive the scholarship. However if you do receive the Banneker/key scholarship, you Will Be placed automatically in the honors program. As others have said, don’t lose hope and good luck!
I still haven’t gotten an email or a package in the mail, does this mean I’m out of the running? I thought I would for sure be at least invited with a 35 ACT, 4.8 GPA, 1/283 class rank, National Merit Finalist, lots of extracurriculars and volunteering…
I’m in-state, less than an hour from CP and I just received by b/k invite yesterday.
