Barnard Chances...low scores...excellent student

Hi…
I’m an honors student who has received many different awards over the years. I am in many different extracurricular activities and clubs. I am the captain of my volleyball varsity team. I have over 120 hours of community service. i am interested in pursuing a career in the field of science, mainly engineering. I come from a religious yeshivah where we have half day of Judaic studies classes- all together, we have around 11 classes per semester.
I took many APs including AP Chem, US History, Euro History, and English LIT. i also am currently taking physics.
I also am part of an architecture club, a math club, and i intern at an engineering and architecture firm in the city.
However, my scores or pretty average.
My unweighted GPA is well over a 4.0, However my unweighted GPA is only a 3.6 (91).
My highest composite ACT grade is a 28. My highest individual scores follow
reading-33
english-27
math-28
science-25
writing-27
as far as SATs, my highest individual scores for each section follow as
math-600
english-640
writing 580
I personally believe my supplemental essays were essays that connected to what the school is interested in regarding future students.
I am also the youngest graduating senior of my class, graduating a year early.
what are my chances…

Math at 25 and 600 is going to be a real problem for Barnard especially if you are trying for the sciences. Your scores and grades are not average for Barnard. If they were, you’d be at the 50th percentile. But you are well below that…you are below the 25th percentile. Their average gpa was 3.86 in 2014, so again this is below where you are.

Certainly you can apply, but I would put Barnard down as a high reach school for you. Good luck!

I am only submitting my SAT scores, which when converted, are higher than a 600…
my math score was a 28- not 25

How are your AP scores? Do you have 5s. That would help.

Sorry, I was looking at your science score at 25. The point is that you do not have a good chance of getting accepted with stats that are mostly below their 25th %ile. They do not care that you are young for your grade or that you come from a yeshiva background. Those factors won’t open doors.

Applicants with your stats that end up being accepted would have to have something else that is very compelling in their application. Like really strong extra curriculars or awards on a national level.

Don’t put your eggs in one basket hoping to get lucky. You need to be more realistic if you really want to understand your chances. My advice to you is to go to the common data set for all the schools you are considering. To feel like it is a match your test scores and gpa should be at the 50th %ile. That would make you “average” for a school. Again, good luck!
