Barnard College Supplement

Working on my Barnard supplement. I'd like to write about my great-grandmother for my historical figure essay, but my dad thinks it needs to be a known historical figure. Thoughts?

What’s the exact prompt?

“Pick one woman in history or fiction to converse with for an hour and explain your choice…”

My GGM lived through 2 world wars and communism, so I find her life both terrible & fascinating.

Hmm. Definitely not what they asked for - I think a big part of this prompt is seeing how well-read you are, but also seeing how your mind works and what you believe is important when you explain your choice. So the former would be totally lost on the admissions officer if you used your great-grandmother, but you might still be able to be compelling with the latter.

I’d say if you think you can make it stunning, go for it. Otherwise, reconsider.

I second peaches’ logic
