Hello, I am a Junior in High School who is determined to go into college majoring in Journalism, I was wondering which school would be better to further my Journalism career. I preferably want to do Sports Journalism but since I am a woman I don’t have much hope. I would just like to hear some arguments as to which school is better and/or possibly why, I am determined to get an amazing educated to where I’ll be able to have an exciting college experience as well as a strong resume by the time I graduate.
Since you are a junior in high school, why don’t you apply to both – and other schools as well --and then worry about which college is best after you know which ones have accepted you?
I don’t believe Barnard has a journalism major. Having said that, many successful journalists didn’t actually major in journalism and, as a student at Barnard, you could write for the Columbia Spectator and take a variety of classes at both Columbia and Barnard which would help prepare you for a career as a journalist.
Look at mizzou or northwestern or syracuse where they have journalism majors and good job placement.
I have tons of friends at Barnard that majored in English and are now working for top places such as The New York Times. The career center are Barnard is amazing and you can get internships both during the year (there are no classes at any of the schools at Columbia on Fridays unless you elect to have one) and the summer in NYC. You also get both the small liberal arts college experience devoted to empowering women as well as the large Ivy League research university experience.
All Barnard grads get degrees from Columbia University and share classes/clubs/greek life/ sports teams/ facilities/ campus with Columbia University. All grads write “Barnard College, Columbia University” on their resumes, and I think Barnard would look much better on a resume than Boston University. I know a lot of girls that try to transfer or do transfer to Barnard from BU, which is also interesting.
It would look better on a resume? Highly subjective. They are both excellent in their own way.
But the thing I am most concerned about is your thinking your gender will prevent you from succeeding in sports journalism. Check this out. Oh and by the way didn’t go to HPYS or Barnard and somehow had a great career. You can do it too. There’s a huge upswell in women in sports media.
