I’ve been reading around about this housing exchange, and I was wondering if it was possible for FIRST YEAR students to live in the other college’s dorms? From what I’ve read, its definitely possible for upperclassmen, but I haven’t read anything specific about freshman. Anyone know anything about this?

No. All Barnard first years live in the Quad. I do think those who are in the Barnard/JTS combined program may have the option to be housed at JTS.

I suppose anything is theoretically “possible” – perhaps another housing arrangement might be made for some student who had very specialized needs, such as a physical disability that could be better accommodated in another dorm-- but I am assuming you are wondering if as an applicant or new admit you can simply request alternative housing, and it doesn’t work that way.

I agree with Calmom. I currently go to Barnard and if you do choose to dorm as a first year, you will need to live in the Quad. Columbia’s housing isn’t very pretty. Additionally, you’re also going to have plenty of opportunities to interact with other Columbia students (if that’s what you’re worried about).
