I’m a rising high school senior. I’m interested in pursuing journalism at a school in New York City, and Barnard is definitely a better fit for me than Columbia is, even though I know Columbia is the one with a reputation for journalism.

What sorts of opportunities to Barnard students have to write for student newspapers or magazines? Also, do/may they write for the Columbia Spectator? Thanks very much.

Yes, Barnard students can and do write for the Spectator – as well as for any other student publications.

If you want a career in journalism, here’s a hint: you can do simple research before asking questions. Professional web sites usually have “about” pages that give detailed information on the organization that runs the web site. The Columbia Spectator has a web site with such a page at [The Columbia Daily Spectator](About Us - Columbia Spectator) – I’d suggest reading the 2nd paragraph on that page.

Jeez! What’s with the snippy response to a legitimate question? FWIW a central principle of competent journalism is to inform yourself regarding a topic by seeking info from knowledgeable sources.

There is a perhaps outdated thread “journalism” that was posted in 2005 in college confidential which responds to a similar query. Interestingly, the thread notes that Judith Miller is a Barnard grad, althought that may be an argument for taking your journalism ethics class elsewhere.

There are a lot of student publications on both Barnard’s and Columbia’s campuses, and you can join the staff/board of any of them. In addition to the Spectator there are the Barnard Bulletin, Tablet, and Echoes at Barnard and the Blue and White and the Fed at Columbia (in addition to political journals and other arts mags). During orientation week I believe there is even an event dedicated to an open house for all of the campus publications, where you can talk to boards and sign up for mailing lists. Also, in NYC there are plenty of options for interning with different publications.

You’ll have the same opportunities at either Barnard or Columbia, and neither has a journalism undergraduate program (Columbia’s reputation comes only from their grad journalism school), so if Barnard seems like a better fit you should go for it!

BTW, the editor-in-chief of Spectator from 09-10 was a Barnard student And there are a lot of Barnard alums in journalism - there’s the ever-popular Anna Quindlen (former journalist), and most noticeably a lot of BC grads in fashion journalism. Last year, the Columbia/Barnard fashion magazine Hoot featured a letter from the current fashion news director at Teen Vogue describing her experience at Barnard.
