Hi
My daughter was accepted to ASU’s nursing program and they suggested she apply to Barrett. Is it hard to manage the additional classwork with a structured program like nursing? Since nursing is downtown Phoenix campus, everyone lives in Taylor Place so is the benefit of the honors floor worth it? She is a good student but worried that the additional stress of honors might be a lot for her to handle. The admissions rep did invite us to come to ASU to learn more about Barrett and think we will do that but was wondering if anyone had first hand info. Thank you.
@LollieW, congrats to your D on her acceptance. If my D gets accepted into Barrett, she would take it. The benefits of being a part of the smaller college is worth it. Especially at Tempe, where my D would go, where there are so many students and you get priority registration by being in Barrett.
Yes it will be more difficult, there are Barrett classes they have to take. But they will have time to figure it out. If by the end of the first semester or end of school year it is just too hard, they can always opt out of it the next year.
Check out the benefits of Barrett Downtown. Your D might get excited about it! The Barrett application is free, so there’s that.
My D19 is applying to Barrett for CS and has similar concerns. What helped her was that we took a tour of the Engineering department and one of the tour guides was a Barrett student, and D was able to discuss those concerns and get reassurance from an existing student. For example, every Barrett freshman takes the Human Event course but then you need to get a certain number of honors credits that can be obtained either by taking an honors version of a class, or by doing a honors contract for an additional project in a regular class. This student said, for example, that she avoided the honors chemistry class because she knew chemistry was not her strong suit, so instead she took a regular chemistry class and did a contract with a professor for an additional project. She said it was a little more work but that Barrett was worth it for the benefits, including priority registration.

As a nurse myself, I think it would be a nice way to start off, but I am not sure with clinicals further into schooling that it could work. It really depends on how many classes you can take honors for that will count for you. I know many kids in honors departments drop out after sophomore year when the perks don’t mean as much. They are living off campus or have more specialized classes they don’t need priority for. So I would still apply and then look into it a little more if you get accepted.
