Barrett Honors or Michigan?

Ann Arbor is very liberal and very international friendly. Since Affirmative Act was banned a few years ago, the African American student population has dropped by half. Nevertheless, it is still very diverse. I have been living here for 19 years on campus and near campus. It is one of the best college towns as indicated by many rankings. Do apply to LSA Honors. It is getting slightly more competitive over the years. They have deferred a lot this year and it seems they are holding a lot of seats for the later rounds. It would be fine if he is not interested in Greek life. It was suspended at UMich last year and it just started resuming activities.

Thank you for the help! He loves the feel of UM & has decided to apply to the honors program. He will be taking his accepted student tour soon so he can compare the two schools and ask any questions.

As an Arizona resident, I can confirm what another AZ poster said above – lots of Arizona’s top students go to Barrett and I haven’t really heard negative feedback about the experience. ASU may have a reputation as a party school, which it may or may not deserve (I’m not an alum of any AZ school, so have no dog nor experience in that fight), but that may be outdated, and they are working hard to offer a lot of opportunities to top students.

I’m not going to argue that ASU is at the same level as UMich, if only because I really don’t have any first-hand experience. UMich is considered by most observers to be one of the top public universities, and if the cost is the same then there are many reasons to pick UMich. I’m just saying that the difference between the 2 might be noticeably smaller than it was 30 years ago and that if there are concrete reasons why the fit is better at ASU (e.g., weather, major strength, doesn’t get into UMich Honors), I think there are solid reasons to consider it.

@BorgityBorg He has been admitted to both as well as a few others. UM & ASU are the “cheapest” options so far. He is still waiting on a couple of schools so I am making him wait and review all of his options before we put a deposit down.

Can you still apply to Ross during freshman year or is it all direct admit now? Something else to consider since you indicated your son might be interested in business.

One may still apply to Ross as sophomore if has not applied pre-admission and got rejected. There are a lot less seats available for transfer as 80% of the class are by freshmen pre-admission. Nevertheless, the number of sophomore applicants may be less as those that are interested in Ross would most likely applied to the freshmen pre-admission,

@Publisher Barrett isn’t free for National Hispanic Scholars, but they did give him a HUGE scholarship which I estimate would have us roughly paying in state tuition only. Michigan is in state for us so the cost of both schools is similar.

He has not applied to Ross so that is still an option if he decides he wants to go into business.

I posted this over on the prep school parents forum a few years ago when our son was going through his college app process, but it might be worth adding to the discussion here.

Our son will graduate next year from a high school with 100% college matriculation and with a high school experience that is validating on its own and does not require further validation from a selective university. He is a dean’s list student in the upper portion of his class and would not feel diminished in any way by considering an honors college like Barrett. My own research into this gem has convinced me that the quality is not exaggerated and that the overall value package is outstanding.

The Barrett Honors college within ASU is truly a residential college, school-within-a-school, with its own nine-acre campus featuring private honors housing and dining. It features small class sizes and direct access to the brain trust of the larger university. The current dean comes from 28 years at Swarthmore and during his 11 years at Barrett has attempted, in his words, “to drop Swarthmore down into midst of the larger U.” Working with the architects of the new campus, he instituted the “house” system he enjoyed as an undergrad at Harvard and many campus features, like the amphitheatre, that he loved at Swarthmore. The refectory is modeled after a similar room at Oxford; the students refer to it as the “Harry Potter Room.” The campus is modern, high-tech, and also boasts several awards for best food (wood-fired brick oven pizza, vegetarian and vegan options that change daily, sushi, and other made-to-order foods).

Though ASU is the largest public university in the nation and probably no boarding school student’s top choice, Barrett is in a class of its own. It is among the top producers of U.S. Fulbright scholarships. Last year, Barrett students submitted 58 Fulbright applications for 23 awards, an astounding success rate, higher than Harvard, Brown, and Yale for that year. Internship and research opportunities are impressive as well. Students matriculate to the best grad schools.

I’ve had the opportunity to meet and spend time with the dean, and I can say that he is focused on bringing an ivy-like experience to this honors college. I really like how he describes admissions to the program. Though the school is certainly looking for top students, it is really interested in those “quirky” bright students ,the ones whose scores may not be what sets them apart. He says they are looking for evidence of intellectual rigor, and they often find it in students whose stats may be lopsided or overshadowed by something brighter in their application. For this reason, he says, Barrett’s profile of incoming students may not appear quite as impressive as the schools he considers Barrett’s peers, but the evidence of their good admissions choices is seen at the other end, in the number of national scholarships and matriculation to the best graduate programs.

The Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University not only provides the highest level of honors education to more than 3,500 students but also enhances the value of its home university to a greater extent than any other major honors program in the country.

Many people fault the annual U.S. News college rankings because of at least a perceived bias in favor of private universities, especially the elite private schools of the Ivy League. ASU is hit hard by the U.S. News rankings, harder by far than it deserves. Among national universities, ASU as a whole comes in at number 139. The main reasons appear to be related to the very large size of the university: more than 56,000 students. Even though ASU does an excellent job of minimizing the number of classes that have over 50 students, and does well in providing classes with fewer than 20 students, the school’s high acceptance rate and relatively low graduation rate probably hurt it most of all.

ASU Barrett achieves this impact by offering a leading honors curriculum, both in substance and extent; by strong advising; by outstanding honors residence communities; and by winning prestigious undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships that indicate as much as any other evidence that Barrett students can compete with the best.

ASU ranks eighth among the 50 universities reviewed in the attainment of prestigious scholarships, first in Udall Scholarships, and third in Marshall Scholars for the last 10 years. The university also ranks very highly in the number of Goldwater and Truman Scholarships. Along with 17 other universities in our review, ASU is a Truman Scholarship Honor Institution.

In 2012, ASU students ranked fifth among all public universities in National Science Foundation grants for graduate study and 11th among all universities, including the Ivy institutions. In the most recent list of Fulbright awardees, Arizona State came in seventh in the nation, and was the third leading public university, behind only Michigan and UC Berkeley.

Honors housing at Barrett scores a perfect 10 out of 10 in our evaluation, based on location, room styles, and dining convenience and quality.

But the honors curricular requirement of at least 36 hours is surely the most important feature at Barrett, although some might argue that the outstanding financial assistance and scholarships available to Barrett students is as important.

All in all, if you’re looking for an honors program that stands out on its home campus and stands out in the nation, Barrett is a great choice.

I did not mean this to be an ad for Barrett, but to use it as an example of a very high quality honors program tucked within the largest public university in the country that should not be beneath the consideration of even the most elite high school students who are looking for the perks of a large research university with all of the benefits of a LAC.

But, after all that, I still wish our son were at our alma mater (instead of a service academy). Go Blue!

That is a very good recap and article. I will say, DS was not impressed with the food at the Barrett dining hall. He is a picky eater so it could just be one of his quirks. He was also accepted into the Polymathic Scholars Honors program at UT Austin, but they haven’t given him the money to make it competitive with UM or Barrett. He really loved the UT campus. Barrett’s campus is impressive as well. It is a resort-like dorm living.

@CalMich check the GPA renewal requirement for Barrett merit awards. It used to be VERY high relative to others…and students lost that award because they did not get the required GPA. I have no idea what it is now.

One thought…you are from Michigan. If all else is equal…and your kiddo wants to go to a different part of the country…college is a good time to do so.

We come from a cold weather/winter part of the country…and one of my kids wanted NOTHING to do with winter while in college. That was a huge criteria for that kid.

My other kiddo currently lives in Phoenix…and really likes it there.
