Barrett Residential Hall Question

My son has a room reserved for this fall (incoming freshman) in the Cereus Hall. He is signed up as a bioengineering major, but he is considering changing his major to Biological Sciences. We are wondering if his room assignment would need to changed. I assume that he is currently assigned to an “engineering” part of Cereus. Is this how it works? Do they have an area were the pre-med, pre-dental types are assigned? We are trying to figure out what all changes he will be making if he does decide to switch majors. He has not signed up for classes yet - he still needs to go through orientation. Thanks for your help!

As I recall they asked which hall/type of room the freshmen wanted. If he didn’t specify some sort of living/learning community within Barrett I think there could be a variety of majors on his floor. Room assignments aren’t final until summer.

He should decide on a major and schedule orientation. ASU orientation sessions begin early in March.

It depends. There is an engineering major hall, but I’m pretty sure there are engineering majors that don’t live there. If he changes, I would call, ask if he is in the engineering section, and if you want, ask to see if he can change. He might not be able to. But in the end, I don’t think it really matters. There are only a few specialized halls in Barrett (I believe only Business, Engineering, and Sustainability, though I could be missing some). Most of the people in the building are random freshmen, as Cereus is one of the freshman dorms. So if it really bothers you, ask, otherwise don’t bother. All it will mean is that his roommate and suitemates will be engineering majors.

Thanks for the information!

If you change your major prior to arrival, they may change his room. If you wait too long to change it, they’ll leave you be. All of the rooms in Barrett are fabulous, the hall is just a technicality.

All of the Fulton engineering students in Barrett have to live on either the 2nd or 3rd floor of Cereus hall. I am assuming if he switches majors before he is assigned a room/roomate he will probably be switched to his 2nd choice. There are 4 floors in Cereus so he can still be in Cereus just not on the engineering floors.

He ended up calling to ask and they told him that they run some type of audit and if a non-engineering major shows up as booked in an engineering room (on that floor) they automatically move them. So he is still in Cereus Hall, but doesn’t have an exact room assignment yet. He is just happy to be anywhere at Barrett. He is looking forward to starting there this fall.
