So I'm a rising senior in high school right now and my current laptop just broke, but I want to wait until next year to get a laptop through my school or something like that. However, my parents have agreed to buy me a laptop to use for a year then pass on to my brother. My only specifications is that it being somewhat durable and be reasonably fast. I'll only really be using it to write apply to college and to do homework and maybe facebook and cc. Any recommendations?

Ok, so basic stuff right? Like facebook, internet, MS office, spider solitaire, etc. Well, I guess any core 2 Duo would work great, 2GB ram should be fine, maybe a 80GB+ HDD would be nice, integrated graphics, etc.

newegg is good at this kinda stuff, here's a suggestion: It costs $650 [this may be above your budget, let me know, but its REALLY good for what you wanna do...maybe a little too good, lol]

In all honesty this will probably last you through a couple of years of college even, depending on what you wanna do?

tell me your budget, and I can make a better recommendation!

Hope this helps!!

For a budget laptop it would probably be a good idea to look for sales in local stores like best buy.

$650 is way more than he needs to spend
just go to slickdeals.net and keep an eye out for a cheap laptop (probably $400-$500)

Thanks you guys. I ended up talking with my parents and phoning a couple of techy friends and ended up getting a Dell something or other with a couple of upgrades for $575.. I think it's like 3gb and 250 something else.

^that's cool! congrats and good luck with your college search ^_^
