My son is deciding between Bates and Bard. Any impressions of the different nature of the student bodies at these two schools?

Thanks.

Oh my goodness, the schools are so different. If your S is alternative and really wanting to push the envelope in lots of ways;social, personal and academic, choose Bard. If your S is interested in a solid, more traditional education, good athletics, perhaps with significant encouragement to spend time overseas, choose Bates. Both are in the middle of nowhere, so for either college your S will need the discipline not to waste his days (and nights) partying. Good luck.

I don't know Bates. Bard is for culture creatives. Probably already the best undergraduate music conservatory in the U.S. at a liberal arts college (and, yes, I am including Oberlin), very strong arts, film. A creative writing program better than any of the Ivies (the faculty is extraordinary). Interesting language and study abroad programs - including having the only liberal arts college in Russia. Environmental sciences are very strong. They've quadrupled their endowment in the past 10-12 years, and all the new building shows.

This is NOT the place for scholar-athletes. ;)

I think Bates is more highly regarded academically, at least on the East Coast. Everyone I knew who went there had an absolutely great four years, and ended up with good jobs as well.

Lately Bates has won awards as a top value LAC (even number one). It also has had 100% med school placement. It's a great school. Not that Bard isn't. I agree with those who say that Bard is for artistic people and those looking for a counter-cultural environment. I would go with Bates, if he wants a normal college experience. But some people really need an alternative experience, and Bard would be great for that.

My S was at Bates for fall semester due to Katrina and really liked it - despite the fact that it was nothing like his first choice school. The students (as well as administration and faculty) were wonderfully welcoming and he had an easy time making friends. Felt really good about the faculty, developed a strong relationship with one professor even in the short time there.

While it is not the "alternative" culture that is the Bard reputation, it is certainly not a jock-prep culture either; plenty of art-y types there.

Thanks for all your replies. Right now he has decided on Bates but the check is not yet in the mail<g>....</g>
