Bates v. Colgate

I got accepted to both Bates and Colgate and I’m gonna have to choose. (major undecided) Which one would everyone go?

Go to Bates and see me.

Or go to Colgate and see my best homie dere.

Okay, seriously, man. They're all great schools. It's up to you to decide. I am pretty sure that you wouldn't regret. It's a win-win situation

Well, I'm seriously worried about 'fitting in' as intl. Have you made up your mind to go to Bates?

Bates has a more liberal, laid back vibe.

Have you considered that Bates is a more egalitarian school, with no fraternities and everyone dines in the same dining hall? It seemed to me that it would be friendlier, less preppy, less exclusionary, plus everything I have heard says that the kids are really smart, but also really nice, and a lot of fun.

At least that was my impression when I visited each with my son.

adigal is right. i love bates and have no regrets. both are great schools, and i looked at both as well. i chose Bates and would choose it again in a second

So I made up this Bates pros and cons list. Anybody wants to add?

Bates

Pros
-no frats
-less preppy, friendlier
-strong academics
-great profs

Cons
-location(ME), winters
-white, rich community
-fewer course offerings than Colgate

Pro
-great one on one relationships with professors, much more personal attention

As far as winters are concerned, I really do think that winters in upstate New York, where Colgate is located, are as cold/wintery as those in Maine...

white, rich community - not really the case at Bates
the location might be a problem if you prefer big cities, but it would be the same case for Colgate

lewiston is definately not a white rich community. it is one of the most diverse cities in the area with many very modest immigrants from europe and africa

I visited both last year and I thought the facilities at Colgate were in better condition. Academically, I didn't see any big difference. Colgate student body seems a little less diverse but not substantially so. Bottom line...do an overnight at both adn go where you feel more comfortable.

i agree flyboy

There are only so many hours in a day, and only so many courses you can take in a semester. I don't think the number of course offerings should determine where you go.

The New Yorker did an article a few months ago about how all these Ethiopians are moving to Lewiston as refugees. It would make for interesting conversation...but then again they probably aren't studying at Bates.

No, but there are service project opportunities in the community with Somali refugees.
