Baylor Honors College

Hi,

My D is a junior and interested in Baylor Honors program. Her SAT score is 1410(CR+M) in one sittting.GPA UW-3.67.
Is it possible to get the University scholar.Does she get admission in Neuroscience with pre med.
Thanks and appreciate response.

@stanford97, re: USchol (that is the vernacular they use per my freshman daughter), I agree with the earlier comment regarding any of the honors, especially USchol, apply early! While I don’t know anything specific about pre-med, there seemed to be A LOT of them in the Honors registration process last summer.

Thanks a lot

I don’t know if it helps, but, both my daughter and I felt that the most competitive was entry to the Honors dorms, Memorial and Alexander. This seems to have loosened up a little with the opening of East Village which is very nice and is where you daughter would probably target as pre-med.

I have a question. I am a senior in HS, and I have been admitted to the Honors Program and BIC for this fall. To keep my scholarship (full-tuition + more) I will be required to maintain a 3.5 or better GPA at Baylor. My question is, if I participate in BIC and Honors, will that make it difficult to keep up this GPA? Is it doable?

I am thinking about declining the BIC admission to ease my workload a little. In HS, I have probably overworked myself, (tons of ECs, lots of sports, keeping grades up) and I have had NO free time. I don’t want to burn out from stress in college.

@SicEm59, I shared this concern for my daughter.

She had a very demanding first semester course load as a USchol, none of the gen ed filler courses and a 300 level class in classics and she did very well, making academic honor roll. It was lots of work on her part, but she also attended almost all the home football games, made lots of new friends and found a church that she is now active in, so she did find time to do things other than study.

I think that if you have the stats for the merit scholarship and the entry to honors that you have the skills to meet the 3.5 requirement if you apply yourself.

Thanks! Overall, I am very excited about being in Honors. The Honors College is, more than anything else, why I am choosing Baylor. It seems like an amazing community!

@Sicem59, are you looking at the Honors dorms (HRC)? Memorial/Alexander? I just had coffee with a fellow Baylor Mom who told me she really wished her kid had done these rather than East Village because of the activities and interaction in the HRC.

Hey all (: So, I’m definitely doing USchol next year. Now, I’m trying to decide if I should also participate in the BIC. Are there any UScholars out there who have done both? Would you recommend it? What are the pros and cons? Any and all comments are helpful!

The one thing I have heard is that it is difficult to do study abroad semester with BIC as it is pretty regimented in terms of taking classes that are offered only specific semesters.

@mytwods , I applied to the HRC recently. I will find out in the next week or so if I got in!

EowynInk, just curious, are you National Merit? And what are you looking at as your main focus in USchol?

@SicEm59 Yep. And I don’t really know yet. I love economics, sociology, history, chemistry, biology, and physics, among other things, so I’m pretty undecided. Sounds like you were NMF too? Are you definitely going to Baylor? Good luck on getting into the HRC! I’m also waiting on March 17th to find out (:

@eowynlnk & @sicem59, good luck!

Looks like I will be taking a trip to Waco tomorrow as my daughters post spring break ride back fell through  Its hard to think that this time last year she was waiting to hear about HRC as well, and now she has only 2 months left till she completes her freshman year, then on to Oxford study abroad this summer. Baylor may not be for everyone, but she absolutely loves it!

Is this a kind of exchange program between Baylor and Oxford ?

@eowynink , I am NMF as well. Baylor is final for me now! It was my #1 through my whole search, and national merit, along with some other scholarships, made it possible for me. Like you, I had a hard time deciding what to study. I’m not really slanted to any subject. I’ve settled on a double major in Math and Religion, weird as that is!

Anyway, best of luck to you also!

@dad2013, its one of the study abroad programs run by Baylor although they have exchange programs as well. Having the opportunity to go to Oxford was one of her must-haves when selecting a school and all three of her final 3 selections Baylor, Alabama & OU had forms of the offering.

Its 6 weeks, scheduled as a summer mini-mester and she is taking three classes, English Lit, Oxford Christians which focuses on Lewis and Tolken and a philosophy class that has some tie in as well. All the classes are taught by Baylor Profs.

One thing we did not understand until registration is that the NMF package includes both summer school and study abroad tuition costs. There are both program fees and travel costs associated with travel abroad as well, but having the tuition covered certainly made it easier to accommodate for my D.

Thanks a lot. The info is absolutely plus for us.
