Excellent point!
The case at Stanford was quite extreme - the perp was caught having sex with an unconscious woman by people walking by, in back of a dumpster. The people held him and called police.
I don’t think it is fair to compare coercion of a sober person with raping an unconscious person in an alley behind a dumpster.
I think the father would have a different song to sing if his son was the one who was raped behind a dumpster…
As for Baylor and football coach etc., my MIL says “it’s a shame about the stain on Joe Paterno’s record, that poor guy…” Not to defend her, but she grew up with an abusive father who punched her out when she dared to defend her mother who was getting beat up. It was like par for the course, to get abused by men. And she felt Paterno was the victim, not the poor kids who were raped. Really twisted reasoning.
Well. Looks like Baylor is reconsidering firing their football coach. If this is indicative of how seriously they are taking this, well, then I sure as heck wouldn’t be sending my child to that school. Wow.
The story is the big athletic donors want him back and are working to get the university to just suspend him for the year.
Wow this is really showing how much more important football is that integrity. AVOID BAYLOR
@baylorpoly The good news is that the administration knows they are on the hot seat. If your student is starting in the fall, I think the best thing you can do is to send an email to the administration asking them to explain what steps they have taken to ensure that sexual misconduct is not tolerated on campus.
The more that administrators are being questioned and challenged by students, parents, and alums, the more they understand that that they are unlikely to survive another incident, if they have not taken significant steps to prevent rape and encourage reporting and support.
What happen at Baylor is beyond horrible but they have been put on notice. I am betting that campus will be beyond safe for the students from this point forward.
Yeah but you do trust an administration and leadership that is shady and not really exemplifying Christian leadership and following Christian principles?
If the football coach is retained after what he did, then there’s a huge problem. It says that football results are considerd more important than justice and that criminals who play football are welcome to prey and harm others, AS SCHOOL POLICY.
The football coach will not be retained. Baylor isn’t going to open up that can of worms. If you look into it, there isn’t really anything to the story (and the “acting” President has already came out to downplay any chance of that occurring).
There were plenty of people petitioning to keep Joe Paterno too. Didn’t happen.
The freshman class for Baylor may be largely unaffected as much of the dam broke after students committed to Baylor. How many applications they receive this next year compared to this past year will be very interesting to follow.
I’m afraid that this is a pervasive problem that is shockingly and horribly occurring at almost every college. Some receive media attention and most do not.
No school is safe, cases from popular schools get more media coverage but it’s happening at every college. At least Baylor campus is save and these incidents happened off campus.
Just back from my daughter’s 2 day orientation and registration at Baylor. You have no idea how many steps have been taken because of what happened. We personally met several police officers and even discussed issues with them on a one on one basis. Title 9 info is everywhere and being talked about to all the kids and parents. We received phone numbers, including parent liason and administrators cell phone numbers to call anytime. I was satisfied with the steps they are taking going forward and honestly there are too many to list here. All the kids have to take mandatory online classes in alcohol education and title 9/sexual harrassment/assault issues before fall classes start. They went out of their way to educate everyone. I couldn’t be happier my daughter is going here in the fall and can’t help but feel she is certainly a little bit safer than on a campus that is not under fire for sexual assault crimes. I chose Baylor for many reasons and after going in with trepidation, I am proud my daughter is a Baylor Bear.
Big 12 and other athletic organizations need to focus on co relation between athletes and rape/violence. Every athelete should receive proper education and there should be tough terms and conditions to make them behave like civilized youth on and off campus.
Both of my kids took the online alcohol/Title IX education classes, required before registration. My athlete also had/still has many meetings about NCAA rules, school rules, coach’s rules on alcohol and title IX issues. Constantly. My kids are both in sororities and get extra lectures and more rules at those meetings.
I don’t think schools are slacking on the education part of the issue, but may be on how they enforce the rules.
The Board of Regents continue to do a grave disservice to the victims of rape by not releasing the facts that support the Pepper Hamilton recommendations. Many alumni, students, and fans will continue to blame the victims for the demise of the football program and the stain on Baylor University’s reputation unless the facts are released so that it is clear who is responsible. Only when the full facts are known can we begin to forgive and heal. Refusal to release the facts is more cover-up in this scandal.
If the Sandusky report could have identifying information redacted so that the sensitive information could be released without violating FERPA laws, then so can the Pepper Hamilton report. Also, the Board of Regents claims that the victims do not want the facts with redacted information released. Were they ever asked? Why should we trust BU to act in way that puts the victims first? A victim advocate for many of the girls were never asked if they don’t want the information released. The girls that she knows would be okay with the release of the facts as long as their identities are protected.
@Baylorpoly …is your kid still going in the fall?
