BB 2nd Ed. Math Questions

Was hoping to get some explanations for a few math questions in the Blue Book 2nd Ed. (10 tests). These questions are for the first practice test.

Section 3:
P. 401 #19, 20
19. You would need the book to answer this one. It has a drawing of a pyramid, and I can't figure out why the answer is A.

A salesperson's commission is k percent of the selling price of a car. Which of the following represents the commission, in dollars, on 2 cars that sold for $14,000 each?

A. 280k
B. 7,000k
C. 28,000k
D. 14,000/100+2k
E. 28,000+k/100

The answer is A.

Section 7:
P. 418 #18 (Free Response)
18. Picture of an upward-facing parabola with vertex at (0,-4).
The graph above shows the function g, where g(x)=k(x+3)(x-3) for some constant k. If g(a-1.2)=0 and a>0, what is the value of a?

The answer is 4.2.

Any help for these would be appreciated.

Draw a line from the right vertex (or any vertex) of the pyramid to the bottom of ‘h’
You will see that you now have a right triangle with m as the hypotenuse, and h and
mROOT(2)/2 as the legs. Applying Pythagorean Theorem (solve for h) to the triangle
will yield m/ROOT(2) as the correct answer.

(14,000 *k/100)2 = 280k

Parabola has zeroes at 3 and -3. => 4.2 - 1.2 = 3 so 4.2 is the answer.

Thank you 10char
