BB Writing Question?

I got this wrong, but I relied on my ear. I want to know the real reason behind the answer (this is from the first BB, so I have no explanations online):

Conflicts between land developers and conservationists have repeatedly A AROSE, B CAUSING Congress to reconsider legislation C THAT PROHIBITS building D WITHIN HABITATS of endangered species. E NO ERROR.

A. should be arisen i believe.

the error is A. arose

the word “have” signifies the present perfect, thus the main verb must also be conjugated in the present perfect form

have arisen instead of have arose

Thanks thrill3nit3, I get it now ;)

Wait- I have another question on the same test.
A CONTRASTING WITH B MOST OTHER fifteenth-century rulers, Portuguese kings C COULD COUNT ON the support of the aristocracy D IN ANY overseas ventures. E NO ERROR.

A Should be compared not contrasting.

Nspired, is that a diction error then?

im pretty sure it is. Comparisons are between similarities and contrasting are the differences i believe? im not very good at writing either lol but im fairly sure im right

NSpired, that kinda doesn’t make sense to me- could you perhaps explain it more?
ANOTHER QUESTION. Sorry, last one
[Jacob Lawrence is best known for his depictions of modern urban life, and] his celebrated painting Forward presents a rural scene from the life of abolitionist Harriet Tuban.
The other choices were stupid. The 2 I wasn’t sure was b/w:

 1. Jacob Lawrence is best known for his depictions of modern urban life, however
 2. Although Jacob Lawrence is best known for his depictions of modern urban life

How do you pick b/w the 2?

the first one is wrong

When however is used to separate two independent clauses (clauses that can stand on their own as sentences), a semicolon must be used, not a comma.

Thanks so much thrill3rnite3, but how are the clauses independent? aren’t they dependent (and thus you can use comma?)

An independent clause is a clause that can stand on its own. In other words, it has a subject and predicate, and it can stand as a complete sentence.

[Jacob Lawrence is best known for his depictions of modern urban life] is a complete sentence and therefore an independent clause in your example.

Same with [his celebrated painting Forward presents a rural scene from the life of abolitionist Harriet Tuban.].

Thanks! I get it now
