BC or Holy Cross for liberal arts

@AgilityAce‌: Can you substantiate your claim?

HC has alsp produced more Rhodes Scholars 5 vs 2 for BC(with HC being only 2800 students vs BC’s 9-10,000 STUDENTS.

@par72:
Interesting data point. It does raise two questions:

1) With such a small sample size, 5. Is it statistically meaningful, or just a random outcome?

2) How does it defend the previous claim that “Holy Cross is a much better school than BC.” ? Better in terms of what?

I’m not arguing for which school is “better” as each has its own merits and shortcomings.

Does HC get some better academic students because they give out more money than BC? It’s my understanding that BC only takes FA or full fare students and bypasses the middle (some of which are brilliant kids but can’t pay the full sticker price.)

Holy Cross alumni giving rate is over 50% while BC’ s is usually in the 25-27% range. Also HC has produced a Nobel Prize winner(Medicine) and currently there are 3 current US Supreme Court Justices with Holy Cross affiliations(1 alum).

The student body at BC is stronger (25-75% SAT 1270/1450 vs. HC’s 1220-1390). And Boston beats Worcester any day.

Holy Cross-top25 LAC and the oldest Jesuit school in New England-meets 100% demonstrated financial need…

@par72: Very interesting style of trying to prove your point.

par72, I know you get paid to post for HC but you should try going beyond the talking points. You have been using the same ones for at least 10 YEARS. It is easy to check your posting history to see this.

Wow. Sally305, thank you for noting that.

I just scanned through many of par72’s posts. They all have the form:
“The answer is Holy Cross. - What was the question?”

Holy Cross and Boston College were both founded by the Jesuits and are still run by them. The two colleges are one hour apart geographically. Holy Cross was founded in 1843 in Worcester because the Protestants wouldn’t let the Jesuits build in Boston and BC was founded 20 years later when the Jesuits finally were able to get land in Boston. As you would expect the schools are quite comparable in quality and in approach.

Oh brother…

It seems as if par72, the Sage of Worcester, may have nothing to demonstrate beyond shallow opinions and doggedness. Not much value for the college applicant, is there?

Imagine how the reputation of Warren Buffet, the Sage of Omaha, would suffer if an investor said he wanted to invest $10 million in either company A, B or C within the next quarter, his investment parameters were X and risk tolerance Y.

Then the Sage reviewed all his available data and returned his answer: “IMO you gotta look to invest in COMPANY Z! It has a building, a staff, and PRODUCT!!!”

Well, collegeconfidential’s college applicants are no different than potential investors and those of us who make the effort to share perspective, advice, context and good will are similar to the Sage of Omaha.

Not the other one.

^^Just because par is a strong supporter of HC is no reason to bash him/her.

Quite frankly, the ‘which school is stronger?’ question is silly. They are two completely different collegiate experiences: one is a LAC and one is a mid-sized Uni with big time D1 sports. Even is one is demonstrably stronger, it should not matter if you prefer the other type of environment.

bluebayou, it’s spamming. Lots of us are supporters of our alma maters or the colleges our kids are attending. The difference is that par72 indiscriminately recommends HC with the same cut-and-paste talking points no matter what the student is looking for. If you want to understand people’s frustration with this, type his user name into google and see what comes up–literally thousands of “might consider HC/top25 LAC 1 hr from Boston/blah blah blah” posts spanning more than a decade.

Most of us are here to be helpful and to engage in useful conversations with students and other parents seeking advice. It does everyone a disservice when the boards are spammed with thoughtless plugs for a single school.

with all due respect Sally, this thread asked specifically about HC. While par maybe HC’s biggest internet supporter, I have not seen him/her bash other schools. S/he just unabashedly supports HC, which to me, is ok on a thread that asks for input on HC. It’s a fine LAC, and for those that want the Jesuit experience in a LAC…

Fair point, but read posts #22-26. par72 is not interested in having a discussion about ANY school, even HC. He just comes in, spews out the talking points, and leaves.

I share your sentiments Sally and thank you for speaking out.

bluebayou,

Sally305 is right and with all due respect, you are wrong about par72. He does not simply respond to questions about HC nor does he respond in good faith.

Here’s a thread that stuck in my craw from 8/12/2014, and was about Villanova initially. And for some odd reason par72 decided to denigrate Colgate:

<a href=“Villanova vs Holy Cross - #40 by markham - College of the Holy Cross - College Confidential Forums”>Villanova vs Holy Cross - #40 by markham - College of the Holy Cross - College Confidential Forums;

You will see that the simplistic approach par72 had on the day was enough to warrant detailed responses from me. And what does he have to say for himself in response? You will see soon enough if read it. Just don’t hold your breath. He has already sucked all the oxygen out of the room and that thread.

Now you know why several posters have asked him to explain himself. See on 8/25 from jkeil911

That’s the problem.

Hi,

Let’s stick to the topic at hand instead of discussing specific posters. You all can continue this over PMs if you choose to do so.
