I'm curious as to reasons why new cadets drop out during beast and if any regret their decision?

some new cadets may drop out simply because they realize that army life is not for them. i.e. they cant handle being yelled at, physical training, get scared of the 5 year active duty obligation.

One of the main reasons for new cadets dropping during Beast is because they went to the academy for someone else. No matter what, they shouldn't have been going because their parents wanted them to. Many also drop because of the physical or academic rigors.

I would think that they would regret dropping out for a long time, but then again (like astro said), not everyone is cut out for Army life.

trust me, everyone gets sick and tired of the academy real fast during beast. Life isnt fun as a new cadet. Interestingly, there were not a whole lot of drop outs this year because beast has changed a lot since previous years. If you want to talk more just pm me. Good luck to you guys.

haha cool name, hugh

Well, I left, and I can tell you the reasons everyone in Tango barracks gave me:

1) Athletes who didn't know what they were getting into.
2) Drug use prior to beast
3) Homesickness
4) Coming for parents/family, not themselves
5) Maladjustment
6) Family problems (deaths, etc while at beast...family issues was why I left).

A friend of mine started beast with the c/o 2010. He dropped after about 2 weeks I think. His reason was he hated the army. He wanted USMC, got turned down at USNA, NROTC, AROTC, made waiting list for USMA and got in. So now he's at Embry Riddle and as far as I know doesn't regret it.

Personally, if I decide I'm going to west point, I'm going to follow it through. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I didn't.

I agree with Erbium. I'm going into USMA c/o 2011, and I know the only way I'm going to leave is if they force me - and I'll be kicking and screaming. I've worked way to hard to get discouraged at how much it sucks.

what happens next for someone who drops out during beast?

You spend a bit of time outprocessing, and then the Academy buys you a ticket home out of Newark, JFK, or LaGuardia. You'll turn in a lot of the stuff you were issued: uniforms, field gear, sheets, stuff like that. You'll have to do paperwork. Turn in your smart card/ID card. Let your parents know you're coming home. It's about a week or so of out processing. During that time, though, you're confined to your room in transient barracks and have to stay in uniform. You eat separately from the rest of the Corps. As for what happens next, community college and a job, I guess. Until Spring applications are due. If you're not physically disqualified during Beast as a medical drop, I'd highly recommend at least sticking it out until Christmas. You'll have a goodly handful of credits and can apply as a transfer, instead of a brand new student to wherever you decide would be a better fit. Plus, you'll have your lap top and printer :)
