Becoming a SAT/ACT tutor?

I've thought about becoming a private tutor. Specifically, I'm curious about SAT and/or ACT tutoring. I hope to help people succeed while earning a flexible income which is compatible with other work (now) or study (in the future).

For clarity, I'd prefer being self-employed to being hired by the well-known test prep companies. I know it will take effort to find clients.

Of course, anyone who doesn't live under a rock knows what the economy is like. Is there still demand for SAT and ACT tutors, given the economy?

As for my qualifications, I have at least some experience with tutoring. I also scored over 1400 out of 1600 on the SAT and 32 on the ACT in high school. One possible sticking point is that my Bachelor's degree is from a relatively unprestigious university. Do you think anyone is likely to care? I know a lot of people around here (NYC) are really concerned with whether one went to a prestigious university. And it just seems hokey to be coaching people to try to get them into elite universities when your own university was nowhere near that level.

Overall, am I being realistic?

Thanks for your time!

I hear most tutors have gotten perfect scores or close to perfect scores, and a 1400 is not very close considering its in the 2100 range out of 2400 , but other than that I dont know. There is still a high demand for tutors, but an even higher demand for SAT classes, which is more popular and affordable.

actually there is tons of similar threads to this question…here is a link to one of them

@samd1993: Thank you for the link. I didn’t see much on the topic when I searched, but it’s possible that the threads were hiding under other keywords.

The 1400 was actually before recentering, so it would actually be higher today just because of that. Also, being done with both high school and university, I’d probably score higher simply because of everything I learned since the last time I wrote the SAT. I’m planning to write it again, not just to advertise the score but also because one of the programs I’m planning to apply to will actually consider the score. My hope is that both of these factors result in a score of at least 2250.

oh ok that makes sense…haha I wonder what it would be like taking the SAT in a room full of little highschoolers haha

I wouldn’t care if it gets me where I’m trying to go.

It probably isn’t a bad idea to take the modern test. A decent score (not that I can say what “decent” is in this context) would be a good selling point. Unfortunately, you can’t easily measure the most important quality of a tutor: how well he or she can teach.
