Been There/Done That Tips for class of 13

I brought one my first year and my roommate and I split the cost of ink. The library charges 10 cents a page, and you can use Terrapin Express or load money onto a copy card.

My daughter moved into Centerville Hall yesterday (for the Marching Band’s Early Week).

The room is definitely bigger than 10’ x 12’. More like 12’ x 13’, with more space than I expected after reading the All Dorms thread.

Since we only live 20 minutes away, she packed very light figuring we can ferry in whatever she forgot. It was very easy since there wasn’t much competition for the carts or the elevators. Everything was moved and unpacked in about 45 minutes.

They gave her a form for reporting any damaged or missing items, which she immediately filled out and turned in (is this really my DD or has her body been taken over by a non-procrastinating alien?).

We plan to conduct the first relief mission tonight, consisting of a waste basket, the TV remote, sodas, her brand new checkbook, and a power strip.

We’ll be planning our attack on Centreville on Thursday. I’m hoping they aren’t strict about the “move in times” for each program… H is now a full-time grad student, with classes that started today; he will be packing up the van, but will be flying up to spend the weekend (and drive back home) with me. D1 and D2 are probably pulling into College Park within the hour; one of D1’s apartment mates is already in their apt, so she’ll be able to move her stuff(at least the stuff currently in the back seat and trunk of her car) in this afternoon. Yay! (Note: By design, I planned to be 2 states away while she moves in this year!!!) D1 pledged to help little sis and me move things in (with maybe some brute force help from one of her male friends); Now she has meetings scheduled all day on Thursday, so we may be unpacking the van onto the sidewalk bright and early so she can get the pleasure of helping us before her 9:00 a.m. (I’m actually hoping that they’ll take pity on me when I pull in to town in my Jed Clampett truck tomorrow and let us unload Weds. night). Arg. Deep breaths, deep breaths!!!

Astro,

Call resnet and tell them that you are from out of state, they will log her into the computer and allow her move in time to move up. I recall last yr that they had it set up that floors 5-8 moved in 8-12 and 1-4 moved in from 1-4. The only problem she might face is that they lovk the elevators so they only go to certain floors, i.e. one elevator only went 5-8 and the other went 1-4, but as they morning wore on the lines got longer they switched both elevators to only 5-8. Remember to enter from the basement because if you go from the lobby it will already be filled by the the time it hits the lobby. The elevator can take about 2 families at a time.

Terp80 no its not an alien, it is a child who doesn’t want to get nailed for previous damage!

DS left about an hour ago with his car packed to the gills. I go tomorrow to drop off all of his other stuff, food, clothes, gaming chair and crap he forgot. Can’t wait because I am sure tonight I will get the Mom, I forgot I need XXXX phone call :D

An AWESOME move-in for BOTH astrokids! Of course, I did not participate at all with D1 (the OCD one who became the creature from the Exorcist for the previous two years, so I bowed out of this year’s fun…it was much more pleasant for both of us.) Both D’s drove up on Tuesday night, and D2 (in Centreville) picked up her key on Wednesday, NO PROBLEM. As soon as I got to College Park, both D’s, and one of D1’s strong male friends met me, and it couldn’t have been better. We could use several of those carts (no one else was moving in), and take the elevator (I’d expected carrying everything up, since she’s on a low floor). Well, having A/C WOULD have been a heck of a lot better!!

We stayed and got everything all organized…it was great, because no one besides the RA was on the floor (so I didn’t feel too out of place being here…and THIS D appreciates her mom’s help on these things!!!) Um, we left for the air conditioned hotel room at 3:30 a.m!!!. Came back today, had lunch with other D (in training classes today), got to see her awesome apartment at the Language House (she’s got a single bedroom this year, and they did a great job putting it together, and D1 has almost EVERYTHING organized, even posters up on the wall!

The carpet 7 1/2 x 9 worked out wonderfully for D2. She and sis moved the furniture around about 8 times before I got up here, before they found the layout she liked best (she went for somebodynew’s previous suggestion of having the beds up against the walls in an “L”, with all the other furniture around the walls. Having the empty space in the middle makes it seem so much more spacious. She’s had several people stop by, parents and kids and say…this room seems so much BIGGER!!).

She put the bed risers under her bedposts…there is 21" of clearance under the bed, so she’s keeping all the plastic bins that she packed her stuff in. Her winter stuff is there (since we’re so far away), extra case of soda…it’s amazing. She brought about 33% more stuff than her sister did freshman year, and she’s got empty shelves and space in her closet.

Haha, H is flying up tonight. He got several “Can you bring xxxxxx” in your luggage calls last night!!!

I’ll be leaving the little Terplets to themselves, as H and I are going to spend a couple of days in Baltimore (27th anniversary!!!). We’ll come back to College Park on Sunday and say our fond farewells (and probably feed them) before we head back home.

I couldn’t have remotely imagined that it would have gone this well…I prepared myself for MUCH worse!!!

That is something I would suggest for girls. After moving in ask the folks to go to BBB and get the bed risers(they look like plastic cups upside down). I will def buy for DD next yr. It raises the bed about 4 inches.

Congrats on the anniversary!

Remember to stay away from 95 on Sunday, the same for 66!

Bringing this thread out of the mothballs…as the questions and tips generally arise every year…

are mattress pads/toppers a good idea? or is the mattress bearable? if they are recommended, what size? thanks.

There are other threads on CC in general that go into the merits of memory foam vs egg-crate type mattress pads. You’ll need twin size and I’d recommend one of those types (memory foam is our vote) with a fitted mattress cover over it.

Yea, you might want to look into a mattress topper. They’re bearable if you really are against the idea but getting even a cheap 10% foam cover makes it infinitely more comfortable! I just went with whatever was cheapest and had no regrets.

DS had the egg crate version and was fine with it. I love memory foam but if you’re in a standard freshman dorm without A/C, I’d stick with the regular egg crate…memory foam tends to be hot IMO. And they are standard twin size mattresses.

thank you :D
