BEFORE SAT PLEASE HELP

Hi i am taking the sat tomorrow, but i am confused about a concept in writing.

Does which always refer to the word before it? For example, in this question

American photographer Annie Leibovitz is renowned for her revealing, eye-catching portraits of celebrities,
(and) characterized by carefully staged settings and the use of vivid primary colors.
(A) and
(B) and she is
© each of them are
(D) each of which are
(E) which are

the answer is E, which doesn’t make sense because which should refer to the portraits, not the celebrities.

The “which” refers to the subject before it, not just the word. In this example, the main subject of the clause is the portraits, which are of celebrities. She is renowned for her portraits. Does that kind of make sense?

@loka123 yeah that makes sense. i just took the sat and that helped me a lot. thanks
