Ben G. a question about transferring to caltech

Hi Ben,
I'd like to know whether Caltech offers merit scholarships to internationals transferring to the university.
I know that there is a caltech examination conducted for transferring..But is the test the same for people transferring after 2 years...
Also in general will an international studying in a US university be considered differently than an international studying outside of USA (u know any benefit/loss)..or are they taken to be in the same pool.

As far as I know, international transfers are considered, and financial aid is available in limited quantities. It is officially need-based aid, but is offered to an extremely select group. The tests are the same no matter when you transfer.

You are probably taken to be roughly the same if you are not a permanent resident, but studying in the US might be a slight advantage.

I am not an expert on international admissions, so I will correct this later if I find out I am wrong about anything.

oh thanks Ben....

Dude i want one advice outside of official capacity...i mean just general...Will a good performance on the entrance test + GPA make up for the (4-5) B's I have in high school (mostly senior year..due to lots of problems..health and ECA related...but i wouldn't like to really talk about them as they'll make me look kind of a sorry figure trying to get sympathy) also like is there a need to take the SAT again..does the score really matter that much after 2 years...And i read somewhere that caltech has no finaid for internationals..thats why i was asking about merit schol's...coz i know people got them waay back in 90's..:)

And i think maybe the finals are the reason the discussion on MIT AA is over...eh

Caltech does have aid for internationals, just in limited quantities. (I know an international student who transferred here after two years at another university with full need-based aid, and he is now going to Harvard for grad school in physics.)

Good performance in college will fix high school errors, but international admissions is tough. Work hard. :-)

That's good to know.

Thanks Ben.

It's also worth nothing that international admissions at Tech are NOT need-blind. i.e. applying for financial aid will hurt your chances of admission.

worth "nothing"????...

And Ben G can you please..if its not too hard..just confirm this from someone..coz i mean caltech doesn't even have a finaid application..so how the hell can an international apply for aid..when there aint any app...I know i am being a pain in the @ss but please i really need to know..

urgh i meant to type "noting" and typoed in an "h". I need to start typing slower.

or proof read :)

Just kidding...who the hell cares about proofreading forums....

hey silver are you a current student there at caltech..

yes yms is a student.

Ack: http://www.finaid.caltech.edu/process/0607TRANSIntSupplementalForm1.pdf

This looks scary, so maybe I was wrong about there being financial aid for international transfers. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure my friend isn't paying anything to be here (his family would not have the money). So let me ask him and get back to you tonight.

"- Financial aid will not be available to international transfer and 3/2 students entering in fall 2006 or later."

It's been added as a measure to reduce the institute's deficit on its general budget.

oh crap...well lemme know if u anytime get to know about any scholarship offering....

wow...Caltech is really treading a fine line regarding that financial issue...
28 million deficit an year is biiig..

I plan to transfer to Caltech after 1 year at University of Melbourne. I am international and I am in my senior year of high school. I was rejected for caltech freshman admission class of 2010. I would like to like ask a few questions:

1) Is 38 IB Points enough to transfer to Caltech, or am I just dreaming out of my league?

2) Should I retake the SAT 1& 2 during the summer before college or during freshman year at college. Will it help my admission if I improve my scores?

3) How does the entrance exam work at Caltech. Do applicants get shortlisted to take the entrance exam, or does every applicant gets the chance to take it?

4) "Good college performance can fix bad high school grades" - Can only one year of college do this though?

Ben G. or anyone that answers these questions thanks in advance!!

An Aussie! Well I'm an international student here, but I'm not a transfer so I can't really answer your last three questions. An IB score of 38 sound pretty solid to me. If you got 7s on Phys HL, Math HL, and maybe Chem or Bio HL that would make it even nicer. The only IB scores at Tech I know are a friend's (42) and mine (43), but 38 definitely doesn't mean you're dreaming out of your league.

I don't know if it's considered though. In freshman admissions, it's not considered at all since you get your scores only after you've gotten a reply. For transfers, I have no clue...

Cheers!

I will get 7s for both Math and Physics HL, I've have been gettin close to 100% on every test. The problems dat pull my IB scores down are my economics and english grades.

PS: I am from Thailand, not aussie. Why would I get a 460 in my verbal if I was an aussie... lol

Any more replies on the last 3 questions?

silver isnt the max IB 42.???

And ben did u come across anything...if u do just let me know alrite..thanks

Nope it's 45, 6*7 + 3 (for extended essay/ToK)

annoying since the EE is a lot of work but only 1.5 points. silly IB.

ok right...yeah i forgot TOK..
