I was just wondering how much of a benefit being a faculty kid would give me? I noticed from the “What are my Chances” forums that apparently this is considered a “hook.” Could someone please explain this? Both of my parents work at my top choice.
Really depends on the school. For example some give faculty kids free tuition, some don’t. Don’t your parents know the answer to this?
What college?
@server456 Washington University in St. Louis. I get free tuition from this school, but how would that benefit WashU if my family does not have to pay as much money?
@snarlatron my parents aren’t very familiar with the college application process
@snarlatron I think the wording of my question is a bit confusing. What I meant was, will WashU be more willing to accept me if I’m a faculty kid?
Yes, you are a legacy if your parents are faculty there. That’s doesn’t mean you are a shoe in. You just get a boost, like all the others with hooks.
Just to be clear, it helps at some schools and not at others. I know for sure it doesn’t help at UT-Austin.
It depends on the school. At my husband’s university, we were told that, between otherwise well-qualified applicants, being a faculty kid is a feather on the scale which can tip towards admission. Wash U probably has written and online materials explaining how its tuition benefit works, and most bigger schools run info meetings for employees about the program in order to explain how it works.
thank you all for helpful information!
Have your parents speak w/their union reps or call HR or simply inquire of fellow co-workers. In some circles being a “fac brat” is the strongest hook. GL to you
First, check if the application even ask that question. If it doesn’t, it is not likely to matter. My friend is a faculty at UMich and his son has marginal stat for admission (right below 25th percentile). He first got deferred from EA to RD and then finally admitted near the final round in April at few years ago Not sure if he would have a chance without his father being a faculty.
