Bennington, Marlbouro.....what are they like?

I am looking at colleges within a 2-4 hr radius of Long Island that accept a gpa of 85-90 and approx SAt of 1650 new score or 1100 old scoring.

Rural setting, interested in forensics, criminalogy or public affairs/political science. Love outdoors and nature, perhaps study enviromental sciences.

Even tho these two colleges fit the location profile I am getting the impression that the culture of the school is laid back creative in studies and designing a major. A hippie student body/artsy?

The college guide I was reading compared them to schools like Bard,Oberlin and Reed.

The location looks right for me but I visited Bard already, would you say that if I was not interested in Bard that I'd feel the same about Bennington and Marlbouro? Can you compare and contrast w/ Bard for me?

What schools do you suggest that fit the description I am looking for?

Bennington & Marlboro are definitely artsy, independent creative places, like Bard.

Have you looked at Hartwick, Hobart, St Lawrence?

they are on list but have not seen them yet. Near HWs is Wells, on the list too, but I know it is a very small school.

Wells may be small, but it has an agreement with Cornell such that one can take just about any course offered. It was, until recently, a women's college.

Are there financial problems at Wells? Why did they become co-ed, and has this changed the amount of money they receive from donors?

Yes, I saw that Wells may cross register classes w/ Cornell. Do you know if Wells provides a shuttle back and forth to Cornell if the student wanted to take a class @ Cornell?

i know Cornell is the host for Wells Rotc program too. He may consider rotc and this would be a plus since all the training is @ Cornell too and they can use thier facilities.

How would you compare Wells and HWS if you know anything of hobart?

At this point all I know is they are in the same region (lakeside schools, different lakes) and they can take Cornell's classes.

I think that the student bodies at Reed and Bard ARE quite similar to that of Bennington (sorry I don't know that much about Marlboro). It is an artsy, hippie, hipster atmosphere to a large extent (also some punks, nerds, A-types, etc.) I would not really say it is laid back though in terms of academics. The professors are pretty demanding and everyone I know takes their work pretty seriously. Part of the reason people pick the school is because they can really focus on what they want to academically, so most people are motivated and excited by what they are doing. Last I heard the average GPA is 3.6 and the average SAT is 1240 (old score), though they will not require the SAT score starting next Fall. Also, you can take classes at Williams, 20 minutes away.
