Bennington vs. Bard

All financial considerations aside, would you choose Bard or Bennington?

My interests include: literature, history, journalism, political studies, international relations, activism, music.

The perspective I’ll get on the Bennington forum will probably lean towards Bennington; if so, why? If not, why?

I’m attracted to Bard for what I perceive to be stronger academics, and Bennington for what seems to be a great community and overall educational philosophy. Are these perceptions accurate?

I would choose Bard for academics (as you mentioned) and because Bennington’s “field work” freshman year (when they send you out for jobs first year for ‘real world’ experience) idea just didn’t fit for me (I’d rather spend freshman year with more of a college experience). The small size of Bennington also was a little much. It was roughly the size of my high school.

I actually like the idea of learning to apply your education throughout your college career.

You have a fundamental misunderstanding of how Field Work Term works, FancyWolverine. FWT is the seven or so week period between early January-Late February in which everyone at Bennington goes out into the “real world” (with varying degrees of success) and works some kind of internship for the period of FWT. It isn’t just a Freshman thing, it isn’t just once, it happens all four years and it’s wonderful.

I will say, if you’re very interested in Journalism don’t come to Bennington. Journalism here amounts to taking lit classes and working on our absolutely awful school paper a few times a term.

Journalism is just one of my interests, and one that I suspect would mean going to graduate school anyway.
