Berkeley College of Chemistry Restrictions?

Hi, I am going to graduate this spring from high school and will be attending a community college for my first two years. Throughout high school I always thought I was going to go to a UC, but things came up and, consequently, I screwed up in school. Anyways, I'm planning to major in Chemical Engineering and i know that Berkeley is ranked top 5. The problem is that even if I do get accepeted there, then I could only complete my BS there because i heard that the college of chemisty doesn't allow its students to continue their MS because it "wants them to experience other schools." So I was wondering how that whole thing works. And, also, other UCs that are know for theie chemical engineering programs, and engineering in general. Thank you and I would appreciate the help!!

Any help is really appreciated. Ive been looking into it and supposedly UCSB is the second in rank when it comes to chemical engineering? Would this be true, considering LA and SD are usually above SB? I know rank isnt everything but it loks like when it comes to geting a job, it truly is. Any thoughts, past experiences, or even questions would be sufficient for me. =] Thanks in advance.

Personally, I really wouldn’t go by program rankings in this case. Berkeley does have a rule that its undergrad students can not get a MS in chemical engineering. I got this from their website:

“Although nearly all of the best chemical engineers are Berkeley graduates, this department, like most other top chemical engineering departments, feels strongly that its’ undergraduates are better served by pursuing graduate studies in a new and different environment. Thus, unless you have obtained a degree elsewhere or have substantial industrial experience since you graduated from Berkeley, we will not admit you to the department for graduate work.”

It really depends on your personal choices, but if you are VERY set on getting a MS in chemical engineering at Cal, then I would go to LA or SD for undergrad. Many top companies heavily recruit from LA (the name alone looks good on your resume) and that would work in your favor. But in all honesty, you have a LOT of time to do this.

Best thing to do now is just maintain a high GPA in CC and see where you get accepted first. After you find that out, then you can start making these decisions.
