Berkeley EECS vs. CMU ECE

Damn, I didn't think I would end in this dilemma.

Anyways, my parents want me to get to the final decision ASAP and I'm stumped.

I got in Berkeley for EECS and CMU for ECE, I'm looking for a respectable tech/finance job after undergrad before grad school. I know CMU is pretty nerdy, and Berkeley is HUGE. I think I'd like the attention and smaller class sizes in CMU; but Berkeley, California and Silicon Valley...

Costs don't matter since I'm international and would be paying almost the same price for both.

However, I'm worried about the intensity of the competition in Berkeley and the dorms being too cramped.

Anyone have any valuable inputs that could help me decide?
Thanks

Thought you already decided for CMU?

Dorms are cramped anywhere…it is not a 5 star hotel  You got a lot of good inputs in your other threads. At this moment, just go by your gut feeling.

For international full pay OOS, I would go CMU but if you want Computer Science, it may be hard to transfer in CMU. EECS Berkeley means you already are in CS…correct?

Thats true. However, how much would the only 2year dorm affect an intl student? Also, are the curves at Berkeley really that harsh?

The last bit is what worries me :/. Since the EECS at Cal may be held at a much higher regard that an ECE from CMU…I’m pretty sure I’ll be taking a CS concentration while doing ECE if I can’t transfer.

So what do you think? x_x This decision is way too big :P

I have seen a lot of threads popping up in UCB with everyone getting scared of the curves. Do you think CMU will be any easier ? No. Both schools are known for their insane work load.

Have confidence in your ability, you will do fine. I recall you had top stats. If you were the top in your class and had the excellent scores to get into these programs and work hard, you will be fine. And didn’t someone mention in the berkeley thread that engineering is more collaborative than competitive?

If you like smaller school…then go with CMU. Both are good as you know. One thing you may want to check is IB/AP credits in CMU vs Berkeley.

IMHO, Berkeley and the Bay Area have much more to offer than CMU and Pittsburgh.

I don’t think that is true. An ECE degree with a concentration in computer engineering is as marketable as a CS degree from CMU. CMU graduates are among the favorites of the likes of Google, Microsoft, etc.

I agree with UCBChemEGrad that the Bay Area has more to offer than Pittsburgh, but a medium-sized private school like CMU has many advantages for an undergrad student compared to a large public school like Berkeley. In terms of job prospects, as I said, there isn’t much difference between a CMU or a Cal degree.

@ifgodwills where did u finally enroll n why? Pl. guide as I am in the same dilemma now …

the OP made his decision a long time ago and will likely not be coming back to the thread to help you out, Nimble. You have an embarrassment of riches if you’ve been admitted to these two schools. Where better do you fit? Start your own thread, and tell us who you are and what you’re like and maybe someone knows enough about these schools to help you. I don’t know much about Berkeley but people on here do.
