Berkeley Housing Needed for Hurricane Displaced Tulane Freshman

It appears that UCB will admit my son to start classes on Tuesday morning without housing. Any suggestions on convenient, safe, and not too expensive housing options that might be available would be greatly appreciated.

The Carlton: Leia at the_carlton@hotmail.com or 510-387-7254

These are private dorms, they are significantly cheaper than on campus housing. Running from 400-600 per month, including utilities.

Good luck!

another possibility is craigs list - http://www.craigslist.org/
I think the co-ops are full, but it is worth a check at http://www.usca.org/.

Lastly, I'd even put in a call to the City of Berkeley, to see if they have any leads.

Definitely check craigslist. It's a great resource for finding apartments in Berkeley.

I know one fraternity in paticular will be opening their doors to Tulane students that have recently come to Berkeley to study. I am not sure about exact prices, or if this will be occuring in several greek houses, but you might want to look into that. It is often far less expensive to live in a greek house than a dormitory/off-campus apartment, and because of recent events related to katrina, prices may be heavily reduced for students like your son.

Living in a frat the first year isn't a good idea, at least in my opinion.

as a boarder, i'm sure it would be fine. besides, if the only other option was an apartment, which in my opinion, may disconnect a first year student from the going-ons of the campus, i think a greek house would be a good bet.

I've e-mailed you.

But have you checked with the Cal housing office for students posting for roommates? Also, there may be some boarding houses and they should also be listed with the housing office. Everyone uses craigslist, and your son could list what his situation is and what he's looking for. But, given that he is new to the campus and has missed orientation, I think being a boarder in a frat is not necessarily a bad idea. They have a lot at stake in controlling alchohol to minors this year.
