Berkeley introduces new math courses for Biology majors!

The new courses are called Math 10A/10B and will replace Math 1A/1B and 16A/16B for Biology majors. The new course also includes topics drawn from Math 55 and Stat 20 with a bit of material from Math 54 and CS 70.

Methods of Mathematics: Calculus, Statistics, and Combinatorics

Seems pretty cool. Another pro for new admits considering a biology major at Berkeley :)

i’ve never seen integrals taught before derivatives. and without any mention of an introduction to limits to boot…

aside from that, sounds like a fun class.

^ I think it’s just basic intro to integrals - as in just calculating the area under the curve with geometry. That’s what we ended with in my precalc class?

The topics also appear to be a good set of topics for someone in a non-math-intensive major (e.g. humanities or non-economics social studies) who wants to get an overview of introductory college level math and statistics topics.

However, unless MCB and IB accept Math 1A and 1B as well, students undecided between biology and more math-intensive majors, or considering a double major of biology and a more math-intensive major, may have a problem deciding what courses to take.

They will continue accepting Math 1A/1B. Doesn’t really make sense for them to not haha.
