Thanks CantabilenApathy! I really appreciate it. Though I’m not sure if I’m willing to go for summer housing but thanks for the heads up!

@ CantabilenApathy: First of all, I need to thank you sooooo much for all of the useful information that you’ve given us. The fact that you already live in a coop house is awesome. I really hope to do the same this summer. I think I’m going to put Euclid and then Davis as my top 2 choices. After that, I’ll just list all the other ones I’m interested in, as you advised above.

Real quick, where would I find an application? Is it online? I couldn’t find it on their website.

If not, I’m going to Berkeley on Wednesday for a campus tour, and then after that I’m heading to the coop houses to check them out. Is there any way to get a brief tour of the inside of one from tourguides/or UCB students? I was hoping to sort of take a quick look at the houses outside and inside to figure out what I would really like and dislike about each one. If I can’t get a tour of some sort, I guess I’ll just sort of scope them out.

Anyway, I want to apply as soon as possible, but only for the 2nd half of summer. How much would that cost from 7/3 - 8/13? I plan on living in a double with another roommate to get in the flow of things for the fall. However, I wouldn’t mind a single either. I noticed on the site that it costs 515$ per month, but I think you mentioned above that you could pay by half summer (first or second half). I would want to pay for just second half I think.

Also, so if I do this, it’s way easier to get into one of the houses in the fall too, right? I haven’t decided whether I want to live in a house or on campus with other transfers, but it would be nice to already have a headstart in points for the coops for fall.

Ooh I see lol. I actually just set up an account for the Summer Sessions online, and now I should be able to apply. I’ll apply asap. My bad for not checking more thoroughly.

I promise I won’t bug you with more questions after this, but:

Do you think I have any chance of getting into any of these houses?

1) Euclid
2) Ridge
3) Davis
4) Kingman
5) Cloyne…I’m not sure if this would pertain to me or not as I would be starting as a new UCB student that summer. Would I be eligible?

6) Wolf

You’re definitely eligible for Cloyne, and if you put that on your list, you’ll most likely end up there. Cloyne is UCB only, and since you’ll be registered by then, you’re eligible. Unless you email the central office specifically saying that you really really really don’t want to be there unless there are absolutely no other options (just putting it at the bottom of your priority list doesn’t necessarily mean that). Cloyne STILL has 20 spots available for this semester- they really need more people. AND they also want to limit the freshman and sophomores there, so transfer students who list Cloyne will most likely end up there.

And if you decide to just list houses like Euclid and Davis, then there’s a good possibility of you getting an email saying that you’re very far down on the waitlist, but there’s still spots at Cloyne (and probably CZ and the women’s only ones too) if you want to take the contract then. You can always update your preference list too- I did it about 3 times.

It’s not a lost cause for the others on your list, but it would be risky to not list at least one big house. I think Ridge and Kingman have a fair amount of turnover. I don’t know how different spring-summer turnover is from spring/summer-fall for the houses.

Keep in mind that higher turnover means more new people. You may not like living in a smaller, quieter house as a junior transfer because the other people will be mainly upper division and grad students who have already formed a group of friends and who are too into their studies to go out of their way to make you feel welcome.

On your application I think you indicate if you want to rent share with someone. This was on mine, but mine’s different because mine was for current members. You may not have the option to rent share, so if it’s not on your app, sorry I brought it up lol. (rent sharing is sharing a double or a triple with someone for approximately 2/3 price, instead of living in a double or a triple alone)

You’re really in luck if you want to just do half of the summer, because you can choose to either stay for the entire summer, or one of the halves, which I believe correspond to UCB session A and D.

Oh, I just found a link from my email to Summer 2010 FAQ that I don’t think was linked on the main site. [Summer and Fall Information](http://berkeleystudentcooperative.org/component/content/article/24/544-summer-and-fall-ocards)
That has lots of info pertaining to transfer students, rent sharing, and contracts. There’s the official info, ignore all of my previous guessing.

In terms of tours, you can drive by them to look at them. Most of them don’t look like anything spectacular from the outside. There are certain weeks when the coops recruit people and have open houses. I don’t know when those are, but I’ll update you when I find out.

How long does one have to wait on the waiting list to get an apartment, alone, considering they are a new applicant?

Crap lol. I think I may have messed up when completing my UCB coop application. Cloyne isn’t on my list of schools to choose from. This is probably due to the fact that I put that I would be a visiting student. I didn’t want to come off as a liar or something and say I am a student at UCB, when in fact, I have yet to be accepted. Should I call the coop office? I really want to get Cloyne on my list considering the unlikelihood of being placed in the other coop houses that I had mentioned.

I should have considered that I would be a student no matter what if I’m going to do the coops for summer. Otherwise, I would withdraw my application. It is already sent in now, and I don’t think I can edit my personal information (in the 1st part). Any advice guys?

You don’t just sit on the waiting list for an appt until one shows up. It’s highly unlikely for you to get in, unless you have disability or are just extremely lucky.

People with points can sit on the waiting list for a semester or more, waiting to acquire more points to move them to the top. You don’t have points, you’ll just stay at the bottom and not move, since people with points are always trying to move and will get placed ahead of you.

@emilsinclair- call or email the central office. on the link I provided earlier there’s a FAQ for transfer students that may answer specifics about applying for the coop before getting accepted. I edited my list 3 times I think by just emailing them saying I wanted to add a couple houses to increase my chances of getting off of the waitlist and to rearrange the preference list a bit. Also, chill out haha. Freak out over your UCB app, not this app. They wait a long time to verify your enrollment status so you could be living in Cloyne for a month before they kicked you out if you weren’t a UCB student.
