Berkeley vs. Pitt for Aspiring Actuary

Basically, I'm a NJ resident who has narrowed down his college choices to Pitt or Berkeley. I'm looking to become an actuary, and as awesome as Berkeley is, I don't know if it's worth it given my career goals. Pitt offered me a nice scholarship and participation in the honors program, while I'd be paying >50k for Berkeley. Berkeley has an actuarial club with resources, as does Pitt, but at Berkeley, I'd be studying Applied Math/Statistics instead of a more specific Actuarial program, and I fear that I won't be readily prepared for taking the actuarial exams while at Berkeley. Thoughts? Opinions?

Go to Pitt. The actuarial field is one field that truly doesn’t value the prestige of your degree. What differentiates you will be your ability to pass the actuarial exams and prove you can be a well-rounded business professional. PM me if you have specific questions, as I have been working as an actuary for the last 8 years.

^ Absolutely correct/

Hi, I am new to this site. I have a daughter who is considering her possible college majors as she is senior in the coming school year. She likes math. So she is thinking of math or statistics as major and maybe finance/business/computer science as minor. I saw some forum talking about Actuary career. From your experience, what major (math/statistics/actual program) should you consider if you are not very sure about future career? Overall, is Actuary a better career than doing quantative research or modeling/forcasting in finance industry? What colleges / universities would you recommend?

Thanks in advance!

You should probably make a new thread instead of bumping up a 4 month old one
