I am interested in medicine and I was wondering, which school would you choose? According to the Williams site, 90% of applicants get into med school but then again statistics arent always as accurate as they say. Berkeley has fantastic science programs as well and its in an urban area, which I like. Help!

go where you'll have the best experience. If you're good at what you decide to do, you'll get in to med school no matter where you go. visit both places, talk to students, and follow your nose.

I also had trouble choosing between a small liberal arts school (Swarthmore) and Berkeley. In terms of academics, i think a small school like williams would be much better than cal. In terms of everything else though (ie life experience, real-world applications, and social development), I think Berkeley's got an edge, and I'm glad I made the choice I did.

If you are interested in medicine definitely choose Williams. I wouldn't be surprised at that statistic that 90% of their applicants get into med school because it's about the same rate as Harvard/Princeton. Berkeley gets about 63% of their applicants into med school. The pre-meds get competitive sometimes and the department where most pre-meds dwell (Molecular-Cell Biology) is way too big. Williams will probably provide you with smaller classes, better professors, better advising, and as mentioned before, better chance at med school.

I've never heard of Williams so I can't give advice.

Then why make a post at all?

comparing berkeley's med school placement rate with Williams' is misleading. Most berkeley students aren't cross admits at one of the top liberal arts colleges in the nation. I hate the numbers game on CC when a student says she's deciding between Cal, Stanford and Princeton and wants to go to med school--if you can get into those schools, then you're top material at Cal...don't let number scare you off. The reasons you mentioned--social development, scenery (the bay area...come on, beat that), and just the amazing amount of things to do are second to none at Cal.

Go Bears...

Vicissitudes, I made a post because I felt like it. But since you seem so concerned with wasting posts, why did you make a post to ask me why I made mine?

OP - since both schools are really fantastic, make sure that you make your decision based on what you LIKE about the schools, and not the number of kids that get into med school. Med school admissions are not just going to give you a spot because you 'went to Williams.' They'll give you a spot because you worked your butt off in high school, got into williams, and continued to work your butt of in college. It all depends on what you want: small LAC, or big uni in california.
