We signed my son up for one week of Berklee College of Music’s Songwriting Summer Camp and to have him stay at their dorms. Speaking later to a college counselor who specializes in art kids, she warned me that Berklee summer programs tend to skew toward older kids. I am wondering if she is thinking more of the 5 week program. Have you sent your rising sophomore to a Berklee summer program? If so, how has it gone. Any thoughts or insight much appreciated!
He’s probably going to be on the younger side. Berklee’s 5-week program is mostly made up of rising seniors with a few rising juniors, and I imagine the same can be said for the 1 week program. Most summer programs like Berklee’s are made up of rising upperclassmen.
I think that it isn’t too advance at all for a rising sophomore for a-week-long summer camp with a dorm experience. My son did (not Berklee because it was too expensive for us even with a full scholarship) since he was as a rising freshman and his friend did Berklee Global in Newport Jazz Festival (free but by audition) as a rising sophomore. Are you going to have your son travel to Boston (or LA)? How comfortable is your child if he needs to fly by himself? Or can you travel with him?
I wasn’t comfortable having my son fly with his instrument by himself until later. His friend traveled with his parents to Boston to Newport as a rising sophomore which made sense.
Go for it! Your son will have a great time. And perhaps, you will have a nice summer, too!
