Hi, I am a junior in high school and I want to go to school for music production. My “dream” school would be Berklee, but after reading more about it on various forums and articles, I am becoming more and more discouraged that it is the right school to pursue. The reason why this school is the #1 on my list is because it seems as though no other schools offer degrees in electronic music production (I want to go into the hip-hop genre) as well as a minor in music business. The other big thing at Berklee is the connections that you will make, either with classmates who may turn into clients/business partners, or opportunities straight out of college for jobs or internships. I have been producing various genres of music for the past year, as well as taking audio production and other classes at the local community college. (I finished all my high school credits and my school pays for concurrent enrollment). The biggest thing for me is affording the college. It is hard enough to get into a school like Berklee, (especially as a white male whose focus is not on an instrument), and with the $65,000/year price tag, it is impossible to imagine being in that much debt straight out of college. The kicker is that with a school as prestigious as Berklee, it seems as though they hand out very little in scholarships for students - even ones as focused as I am. I really am just looking for some advice from people who may know more about Berklee, or people who know of other options for studying electronic music production and music business. (All of the schools I have found have been focused on music recording, and I don’t want to spend my money on a college where I am just recording the choir/orchestra and not learning as much about producing genres of music I’m interested in). Thank you!
There are terminology issues with the field you are interested in and as you say you need a creative pyuduction major versus straight techie recording skills. There are several threads on this. Will PM you tomorrow!
