Best biomedical engineering (BME) schools?

how well you remember that argument from a year ago, rjkofnovi. :)

^^ That’s the one, rjk…a really good one, I might add. ;)

^^“how is Carnegie Mellon with BME?”

The Dept. is headed by a Taiwanese American who did his undergrad at the National Taiwan University and PhD from Harvard. My cousin was recruited by him but at the graduate level. In short, from I’ve heard, the BME students have the access to both the reknown UPMC and Pittsburgh NMR Center for Biomedical Research. Hence, I would say that the program is top-notch.

You can’t take BME as a stand alone major at CMU. You have to take it as double major, jointly with some other engineering specialty. That may be one of the reasons BTW why CMU’s BME program is relatively low ranked by US News and other similar rankings.

Depending on the track you choose, you may combine BME for example with electrical engineering, chemical engineering, or mechanical engineering.

As a final comment, it is worth mentioning that CMU has elected BME and biological sciences in general as some of its top priority areas for future expansion. As mentioned above, CMU has developed in recent times a closer association with the University of Pittsburgh’s medical school to strengthen both research and education in biological sciences and biomedical engineering. CMU has also drawn from its leadership position in computer science and robotics to boost some research areas in bioengineering applications and computational molecular biology.

" That’s the one, rjk…a really good one, I might add. "

No doubt in my mind about that one. Do you think that UCR can claim UCLA or UCI as it’s defacto medical school? Just wondering? :-)

^ Uh, no, because UCR is developing its own medical school.

UCSF was the original University of California’s health sciences campus (Berkeley was the main campus and Davis was the agricultural sciences campus).

[1868-1898 - Introduction - A History of UCSF](1868-1898 - Introduction - A History of UCSF)

UCSF is Berkeley’s health sciences campus…just like USC, UCLA and Cornell have their own health sciences campus in a different location from the main university.

Can some of BME major students talk about their grade curve of their schools like one did for Johns Hopkins? What about Duke, George Tech, Rice, U Penn, MIT. etc.
Thansk

I would like to know about BME program specifically at UCLA and Georgia TEch. Can someone knowledgeable speak up?

Thanks
