Hi I'm changing majors next Fall from Engineering to Biology. I'm currently going to Acadia University which has a great Engineering program, however their Biology program is more geared towards people wanting to continue to Med school. It doesn't have a lot of courses geared towards those who want to stay in the pure science field. If I had decided to to enter biology from the start I would have probably chosen another university. I'm interested in zoology and will want to go on to get a masters and Ph.D in it. I'm also considering going for my Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine afterwards. Basically I'm thinking about transferring to a different university. Acadia is mainly undergraduate which is nice though, but I wouldn't mind going towards a more comprehensive one either. Any suggestions? I'm open to anything as long as it's in Canada. I didn't struggle with Engineering, I just want to do something I have a greater passion in.

Hi, I recently got accepted into Acadia where i’ll be majoring in Spanish. I’m from the Turks and Caicos which is a small country North of the Bahamas with a population of about 38,000. I’m extremely nervous about re-locating to Canada as the climate is completely different; the Turks and Caicos is sunny all year-round with only 28 inches of rain falling each year. I’ve never been to Canada and I want to know where should I buy my school supplies, dorm essentials, winter clothing, and what wolfville is like. I also saw on the Acadia website that I have the option of buying my laptop from the tech store. Is it best for me to buy a laptop from the tech store? Any advice or tips you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

I’m not sure you’re going to get a definitive answer for which is the best uni for Zoology. What type of animals are you most interested in? I ask because many zoology folks think marine life is pretty interesting. And since you’re in the maritimes, and there’s a vet college in PEI, you might want to stay on the east coast. I’m guessing Dalhousie has pretty good marine research.

Acadia probably doesn’t have a lot of grad offerings to get you acclimated to grad work later, but can you apply to an honours program? What year are you in? There must be some marine research at Acadia.

You have to ask yourself how likely a Vet degree is for you. Since there are only a handful of vet schools, you might want to choose based on that. Ontario has Guelph for vet, so a U of T or Queen’s for undergrad makes sense. There’s vet at U of M, so McGill makes sense. I’m guessing UBC is one of the best for marine biology, but the nearest vet college is U of C.

It all depends on where your interests lie within zoology, vet likelihood, how unhappy you are, whether you can max out the offerings at Acadia, do research, get good recs, etc. Acadia might not be a bad place to be for undergrad zoology if you can squeeze as much out of it as possible. Some zoology folks in Saskatchewan might think you’re lucky to be on a coast.

Other than that, maybe think about what sub-discipline in zoology that you like, and peruse the journals to find the profs whose work you’re interested in. Aim for one of their programs for grad.

@Christa23. I’m sure you have nothing to worry about regarding supplies and winter clothes. You’ll have time to purchase these things. You might want to get your number of posts higher so you can send a private message to ncldeveau.

When are you starting school? What other schools did you apply to? Have you chosen Acadia or are you still learning more about Canadian schools?

The cheapest one because it’s not getting you a good job.

Okay, I will try to get my posts up. I’m starting in September and I applied to Dalhousie, Saint Mary’s, McGill and U of Alberta. I really like Acadia but i’m still exploring my options.

@Christa23. We can PM each other when we get our posts to 15.

What is your intended major? What area of Canada do you want to go to school? Are you applying to east coast schools because it is closer to your country?

I realize I don’t know anything about your interests or stats, but I’d recommend looking into Mount Allison in New Brunswick and Queen’s University in Ontario, if you haven’t already. In my opinion, they’re two of the best schools for undergrad. The schools you applied to are all good choices too. But it really depends on your interests and stats and future plans, etc.

Let’s try to get our posts to 15 and PM so we’re not hijacking the OP’s thread!

I agree I don’t want to hijack his thread either, as soon as I get my posts up to 15 I will pm you.
