Yup, another course that I'm taking next semester! It is one that seniors usually take, because it fills up very quickly, and you need to have enough credits to be able to register early, It is called CTCS 476: Theatrical Film Symposium. Upcoming movies are shown, and then someone who made the movie comes in to talk about it.

cananyone who took the sailing course give aquick description of the course and is final??

"I heard that there's a class in the film school that's really popular where students preview upcoming films or something like that, then talk to the directors? Am I crazy or is there actually a class like that?"

Yes, I don't know the course number but it's Leonard Maltin's class which is held one evening a week. Spring semester ended with Ron Howard visiting the class. (You can read about it at Maltin's blog, Movie Crazy: Leonard Maltin's MOVIE CRAZY -- scroll down or check the archives if you don't see it, he doesn't have Permalinks for individual posts.)

I just finished my freshman year at SC and I think every student at USC should take CTCS-190 (Intro to Cinema) at some point, whether or not they plan on having a career in film. It's taught by Dr. Casper, who is absolutely amazing. He's pretty scary at first, but he's also hilarious. It's a really hard class, but I definitely thought it was worth it. If you ever watch movies, it'll be interesting for you.

Also, I thought CTCS-192 (Race, Class and Gender in American Film) was a really good class. It satisfies the diversity requirement and I would definitely recommend it. Hard again, but not as bad as 190 and Dr. Boyd (aka "The Good Doctor" or "The Notorious PhD" as he calls himself) is an amazing professor. The movies are more recent than the ones shown in 190. This last semester we saw Crash, The Last King of Scotland, Do the Right Thing, American Gangster, Hustle & Flow and lots more.

By the way, I'm not a cinema major or minor so you definitely don't have to be a part of the cinema school to take these courses.

what are the some the best GE classes to take?

bumppppppppppppppp

Hmmm, it looks like my D took over my account yesterday (see above). Glad to know that she liked her classes anyway.

Definitely. My daughter's had 3 classes with Dr. Casper now and I got to sit in on a class last semester. Loved it. She was just accepted by the Cinema School for a minor in Critical Studies in Film to go along with her minor in Geology. Nothing like diverse interests (grin).

Congrats on your D's CSA minor, PBK Mom. She sounds like a future Renaissance scholar!

"Congrats on your D's CSA minor, PBK Mom. She sounds like a future Renaissance scholar!"

Thanks. :) With a History major and minors in Geology and Cinema, she's definitely interested in the possibility. I just hope she can find a job (grin).

Anything by Professor Terry Seip! He is very enthusiastic about the subject matter, and is a captivating teacher. If you are looking for GE rec's, I have heard that HIST 200 with him is a great class. I personally took HIST 360 with him and enjoyed it very much. :)

major bump. it’s fun reading about what really cool classes i could take at usc if i go there. ^_^

ARLT 100: Los Angeles Stories with Chris Freeman

This man is an amazing teacher and he has so much insight into the world of Los Angeles, where it came from and where it’s going. Honestly, he made me feel more home in such a foreign city than I think anything else about USC has. And now, when I drive around the city, I feel like I’ve lived there for years because of everything he teaches you. Plus there’s only a couple papers and the material is super interesting.

Great thread!

FYI - I’m not sure if anyone’s answered this, but…

THERE WILL BE A SURFING CLASS FALL 2010! It’s a new class that’s being offered next semester!

Great!! Is the sailing class still on? What are some good GE classes to take? Son will need history/sociology type courses.

Yup! Sailing class is offered every semester - and it’s only 2 units!

As for GE classes, depends on the category - but from what I’ve taken:

CAT V
With Professor Joseph Dane - I took his poetry class and it was amazing! He’s a really hilarious guy and he makes you WANT to go to class (I know, it sounds weird). Dane’s an eccentric man with a lot of great stories - proves that wisdom comes with age!

Poetry!! I don’t think my son will want to take it even though he might end up enjoying it from what you said. Any other GE classes?

The surfing class filled up in like 2 seconds. They should have offered a bunch of sections of it :(

Oh my! Sure is popular and well known!

K, are you a freshman?
