Best Colleges for a European History Major

Hey I was thinking of getting a major in european history, another in U.S. history (if the school I go to offers a double major) and a minor in politics. So far my top choices are Binghamton, UNC Chapel Hill, UMD College Park, American University and Gettysberg. Any other recommendations?

Gettysburg is supposed to be very good for history. It really depends on your stats, though. George Washington would be a good D.C, option is you have the scores. Visit a small liberal arts college and one of the large schools like Maryland to figure out if you want to add more small places or more large places.

Thanks, and what about the Ivies cause I was thinking of applying to at least one. Any recommendations?

Almost all undergrad history programs require a major to take at least one course in each of American, European, and Non-Western History. In addition, usually one course must be in pre-modern history (say, before 1600). Many programs encourage or require a concentration of 3-4 courses on a specific theme (e.g., war & revolution, colonialism, etc), a geographic area, or a chronological period. There is no history major specifically in European History or American History as such. There are good reasons for encouraging coursework across a number of geographic regions and chronological periods, primarily to give a comparative perspective.

Many universities offer a major in American Studies which combines American History, American Literature, etc. Harvard offers a major in History + Literature, which often focuses on a particular geographic area, depending on one’s interests.

At the undergrad, nearly every Ivy, Ivy-level university except the hardcore engineering schools, public Ivies like UVA, topflight LACs like Oberlin, and many other universities in the top 100 have strong European/American history programs.

If you have a definite focus within US/European history, I’d look at the history department website of each university/college you’re thinking of applying to to see if they offer courses/Professors in the areas you’re interested in.
