<p>I'm a young home-school student that will be starting college next fall at the young age of 16! I plan to do my first year here in my city so I can still study with my current voice teacher still, and to get my Gen-ED finished. However after that first year, I need a university that I might want to transfer to! I have heard of a few good schools, but I don't know if they are better for undergrads or grad students. What schools have good vocal/opera programs for undergrads?</p>
<p>I'm currently a lyric soprano and am hoping to work into the lyric coloratura fach. I know that one of the most important things for your vocal training, is to have a good teacher! Are there any teachers (near or teaching at one of these good universities) that are great at working with these types of sopranos? </p>

<p>What region are looking at? Is financial aid an issue? Do you want a larger university, a conservatory, a LAC? Urban or rural ? In short there are lots and lots of undergrad programs with great teachers, so you need to help folks narrow down the list. Good luck!</p>
<p>I was hoping for a small to medium sized school, university, possibly conservatory, rural or urban. Financial aid would be helpful. West coast, east coast, or Illinois/Indiana is where I would like to be.</p>
<p>well the Jacobs school of music @ indiana university is one of the best, especially for opera. they put on 6 fully staged operas a year, which is more than the professional opera company in my city</p>
<p>You are 16, so it may not be an issue… but know that many music programs will require you to complete four years of study at their institution. This often has to do with music credits not transferring from other institutions, and the number of semesters it takes to work through the voice levels.</p>
<p>The general education classes you take will likely transfer… but may or may not meet general education requirements (depending on the school).</p>

<p>As a 16 year old, It most likely does make sense to wait a year before applying as a vocalist to music programs. Vocal development takes time. </p>
<p>I do not necessarily have suggestions of programs… but look for the kinds of productions that are being done at the schools that interest you, and what kinds of opportunities are going to undergrads. Generally, opera scene programs, operetta, “lighter” opera, opera chorus, and more legit musical theatre seem to be the kinds of opportunities that go to undergrads at most schools. This is not necessarily a bad thing. From what I understand much of the opera repertory could push a young undergraduate student too fast too soon if they were being asked to perform entire roles. </p>
<p>If you are looking at schools that also have graduate programs, make sure they also have opportunities for the development of undergraduates. If you are looking at schools with musical theatre programs, make sure that there is opportunity for VP students to be cast in more legit musical theatre performances and/ or VP students to perform roles in school of music specific musical, operetta, and appropriate opera performances. </p>
