University College London is pretty good too in England.

To boomer01 - Ireland's not part of the UK!!! :)

Yes, best UK unis:
Oxford
Cambridge
Imperial College (exceptional, science-specific)
LSE (excpetional in its one subject)
Warwick (up-and-coming university, very good for Economics)
Durham (exceptional in some subjects (History, Law, English, Geography...), a little pathetic in others)
UCL (exceptional in nothing, though very good in almost everything)
York (social-sciences specific, hideous campus though)
St Andrews (overall pretty good, good place to go if you want to go to the us for graduate school - it's reputation is very inflated there (not a bad thing at all!))

Quote: 'iv heard from several people the LSe isnt really as great as it used to be?'

Somebody one told me that people were saying LSE wasn't as good as it used to be the day before it was founded...Of all universities LSE seems to be the one most surrounded by fallacies and stereotypes.

If anything in the last 10 years LSE has been going through one of its highpoints ( in terms of public impact and student demand).

I love the bit above about LSE being 'exceptional in its one subject'. Check out the LSE website and you'll see the range of subjects that it does cover (incidentally economics majors compose a small minority of its students, and its full name is 'London School of Economics and Political Science' -now of course we'll get posts saying it's exceptional in its two subjects..)

I know that science/engineering/math graduates from top Chinese universities are pretty good at whatever they are studying. I met some at Stanford and they did well in classes. They are definitely well-prepared for graduate programs in the US, including the top ones. Tsing Hua is probably one of the biggest feeders to schools like MIT.

adding to the scandinavian schools--the karolinska institute in sweden is really good for medicine.

Also in Canada. University of Alberta has one of the best Arts Programs (Fine arts and languages along with some sciences) in Canada, don't rule it out.

If you want to study in Europe, there's a good school in Venice (Italy) as far as I know. There's also Oxford University, but I'm sure you heard that one. There's tons in Germany and there's even more in France, but I can't name them all.

Moscow State University (MSU) - Best university in Russia.

How come everyone always forgets about Edinburgh when they talk about the UK? It was ranked as 5th in Times league tables this year (above St. Andrews, Warwick, UCL, Durham, and York :P )

international university bremen (germany)
middle east technich university (turkey)
bogazici university (turkey)
moscow state university (russia)

the best universities in kyrgyzstan are kyrgyz-russian slavic university
and american university in central asia

INDIAN INSITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY kicksass for enggineering...its definately the most rigorous engg school in the world and the most difficult to get into..

let me add Ko

intls here applying to places elsewhere the Us for back up ?

Yeah, I also heard about Bogazici University and Bilkent University.

Australia:
Melbourne University
Australian National University
Macquariee University
Monash University

INDIA:

IIT (do i need to expand even?)
NIT (National Institute of Tecnology)
BITS (Birla Inst of Technological Sciences)

Business:
IIM (Indian Inst of Management)

Hey! could you guys tell me how good IU Bremen is? Compare it to say, NUS and NTU

I am a fluent speaker of the german language and it is one of my A level subjects

well the ones that come to my mind are...IIT,NUS,NTU,IUB,Monash,ANU,ETH Zurich,Melbourne...there are many more but i think these are the more famous ones...

and then there are the schools in the UK and Canada too...
