I am trying to spend this summer looking for good places to attend in Texas. I am trying to look for a place where scholarship chances are good and has a good science, pre med, or engineering program. I would prefer somewhere near DFW here in Texas. The only good places I could think near DFW were UTD or UNT. UT and Texas A&M are also good options, but UT Austin does not give merits or scholarships easily. I have also heard of Austin College in Sherman, TX, but I do not think there is much near the College besides a small town. Any advice about the schools here in Texas would be appreciated. UTD seems like a very good place, but I do not think I will be getting the regular college experience since it is more of commuter school. But to be honest a college experience is what you make of it now think of it.
There are also SMU and TCU – might as well run the NPC on them to see if you could afford them.
@wildguy57, can you give us any of your stats and preferences so we can make recommendations? Also, if you are needing scholarships and what your parents are willing to contribute.
I know people who have received good scholarship offers from Baylor and SMU so you may want to check into those colleges.
Rice
While not near DFW, Trinity University is worth a look. Merit aid is available.

@goingnutsmom I am in top seven percent in my school
I got a thirty plus composite score on my ACT
As for preferences, I just visited UNT, and I really did not like it. Other than the high chance of scholarship offers, there really was not much that appealed to me.
How does UTA compare to UTD?
Also what does npc mean exactly?

@MomofWildChild has opinions about UTD, I believe.
Well, I’ve been gone for over 10 years, but when I was in the area UTD was definitely a commuter school, but did have some residential students. It is strong in math/science. I wouldn’t call it a traditional college experience, but it you are looking for merit money it might be worth a visit.
I would need to know how much you can spend per year prior to making recommendations. Trinity/Baylor/TAMU/SMU/UH/UTD all have merit scholarships but its only affordable if you can pay the balance. NMF a possibility?
UT Dallas had added a lot of housing in recent years. I couldn’t find the number of housing units, but it appears to be in the hundreds, including apartments and dorms. http://www.utdallas.edu/housing/
Texas Tech, University of Dallas
If you want to stay in a North Texas then I think that UT Dallas is your best bet for a solid education. I know families whose kids have gone there or are currently there and have been pleased. It’s very strong in STEM. It’s known as a nerd or geek school and has no big emphasis on sports. It is true that they have grown incredibly with the addition of the dorms. It is really aspiring to be a top school. So, it does offer a lot of merit opportunities to top students IF they apply very early. But I don’t think it has the college culture yet quite defined for itself. You will have to be open to trying to find your clan and define your college experience for yourself. In other words, you’ll have to have a lot of initiative.
University of Dallas is a very small school that is focused on the core and is known for he classics. I believe it’s a Catholic school. I’m not sure that the OP was looking for that experience.
I second the rec for Trinity University but it’s in San Antonio. It really attracts some very top students with merit.
If you need merit UT Austin is not the place for you, we are local and DS could communte to UT but has picked UTD as his preferred most, affordable option. If San Antonio is an option I’ll go along with Trinity and add UT San Antonio.
Does Trinity have a good science, pre med, or engineering program? I am not very familiar with Trinity nor the area near it. I do know UTD also has good job opportunities after graduating because it is near a Telecommunications hub.
@wildguy57 Take the time to research UT Arlington. You’ll be pleasantly surprised with what it has to offer and why quality students are making the school their top choice. You hurt yourself if you don’t give each school in DFW a fair look … especially the largest one in DFW (it’s the most popular for good reasons).
For example, 75% of the fall incoming class at UT Arlington ranked in the top 25% of their senior class followed by UT Dallas’ 61% and UNT’s 54% (see the 2016-2017 common data set for each school). UT Arlington is apparently a very competitive and appealing school
I would take a close look at Trinity a close look.
