Best dates to take SAT?

My D is considering taking the SAT a few times next year during her Junior and Senior year, but wondered if we selected only two or three, which worked for previous test takers.

January 2012 - Negative: test is middle of Junior year, so perhaps more could be learned, and the test is close to high school finals.

May 2012 - Positive: test is near end of school year so all material learned. Negative: At the same time as AP exams.

June 2012 - Positive: test is at end of school year. Negative: At the same time as finals.

October 2012 - Negative: After summer and by this time could have practice burnout.

Considering schools that require all scores, so don't want to take too many tests.

Appreciate all feedback.

She should use August and Sept. to study hard then take the test in Oct
It would be harsh though cuz people want to have fun in their summer vacation not to stay at home and study
Try to make her manage her time so that she can study like 2 hours at morning and 2 hours at night in the summer time

Well by junior year, she should have already learned all the critical reading and writing information. What year of math did she last complete?
As for the test date, I personally took the SAT for the first time in may, and I’m retaking in october. Definitely do not wait until october of senior year, because if she needs to retake, she really won’t have any time at that point. I would personally suggesting taking it for the first time in May. she should not really be studying for the SAT at this point. I’m sure that she will be preparing for weeks or months beforehand, but it’s not the kind of test you pull an all nighter the night before for, so it really should not interfere with AP studying. I took the test the day after my APUSH exam and it was fine

S is scheduled to take the ACT and SAT back to back weekends in Dec.
Jan = Finals
Spring = Track season.
If he needs to retake, he will shoot for May 5th before Track gets into conference finals, etc…

What about March 2012? I would definitely not wait until October to take it for the first time.

Also, the SAT math only goes up to the early part of Algebra II, so material yet to learn may not be as big an issue as you think.

Is november a good time?

What about March 2012?

And the May date would be ideal for Subject Tests for the subjects in which your daughter is taking AP classes.

^^we did the same.

S1 prepped from Jan.-Mar. and then took the SAT in March sitting immediately after the prep ended. Did not need to retake. Then he took SAT II/subject tests in May and June immediately after taking some of the AP’s (he was already prepped for some of those as well since teachers had prepped for the AP exams -i.e US History, English Lit). If D needs to retake SAT, then she could do it in June.

That leaves Oct to retake again, or more SAT II’s. Keep in mind that if she plans to take a language with listening SAT II, many of those are only offered in Nov., so some take those junior year to avoid having to try to fit them in during application time senior year.

Also, rather then retaking SAT for a 3rd sitting, others decide to prep during summer and try the ACT in Sept. Good luck!

October is the best! Once that monkey gets off your back, the feeling of relief is like no other.
