After school, I plan on pursuing a career in human enhancement, and I was just wondering which degrees would be best to pursue as an undergrad? (biomed, biotech, bioengineering, chemical and biological engineering).
What do you mean by human enhancement? My first guess is all of those degrees might be pertinent. It’s probably more important to pick the right electives and research.
Basically anything that has to do the application of cellular science, as well as technology, to better the body, whether it be through curing diseases, prolonging life, cybernetics, stem cell research, pretty much anything having to do with bettering human life.
To get into the grad programs that would let you do what you are interested in, an undergrad degree in any of the majors you listed above would be fine. So would biology, chemistry, or human nutrition.
As others have suggested, I think it’s less about your specific degree, and more about what you do with it. Gain research experience in topics of interest. As you learn more about the field(s) and your particular interests, discuss your options with your professors and determine what additional degrees or experiences are necessary for the career you want.
An engineering degree–either mechanical, chemical, or electrical–would facilitate many of those goals. So would other (non-engineering) degrees, but the versatility and employability of an engineering degree can be extremely valuable.
